had lunch with MRS cousin last Saturday, & in discussion I think I'm going to go deer hunting over east with him this year... shotgun zone... I don't know why, but I've always preferred an alternate to using slugs...
my options this year...
I scoped my modern muzzleloader, after the state park hunt last year ( the state used to let you use a scope if hunting in another season, but had to remove the scope when hunting during muzzleloader season... they changed that rule last year, allowing scope use during muzzleloader season ) I never mounted a scope previously, but after they changed the rule, the modern smoke pole got glass
In the past I've usually hunted with a Contender, in cartridges from 45-70, 30-30, & 45 Colt, & that is still tempting
I now have a couple revolvers that would be fun to hunt with... my newly customized 5" 480 Ruger Super Blackhawk, or my 6" S&W 610 that has been rechambered to 10mm Magnum... there are others, but those two are likely to get the 1st nod...
... or I could actually try to use a shotgun... I have my survival folding 12 ga that might be interesting to take a deer with ( I have other shotguns as well... but you may notice the single shot preferences here, except for the revolvers
Cousins property is thick woods in the bluffs along the Mississippi river... longer shots are not likely... only disadvantage, is that there is public hunting ground on 3 sides, so often the deer are moving through at a pretty good clip... making the revolvers seem like a good option
thoughts??? Suggestions???

You can use a pistol in a shotgun zone?
Use a shotgun.....I used to always use 00 buck with #1 buck behind it. <- That is a period....
If you're OK with the recoil from a 3" shell use them.....

A slug is devastating on game, it deflates game quick and provides a really good blood trail. Even from a smoothbore 100 yard accuracy is quite good. I’ve actually taken mule deer with a slug from a smoothbore, in open sagebrush terrain.

If I lived in a zone that allows the use of a handgun, I'd go with a handgun. I had to move back to Massachusetts and it is a shotgun state. I can use a muzzleloader during the shotgun season without an issue but no handgun in the field during that time. Ironic that I can use a scoped sabot shooting slug gun that can mimic a hotloaded 4570 yet cannot go with a 4570 handgun. Odd but that is the way it is.
I still have my Connecticut hunting license and for the year they have to honor the revolver endorsement on it. Ok. I think readers here are saying,:" Dang it BB, move out of the northeast altogether". In due time. I do plan a move in a few years but I cannot do it right now due to family issues at the moment.
If I were in the same situation and it sounds like you have to use a straight wall case round, I'd run with my TC Contender with the 4570 barrel and on the side Dad's S&W M29 five screw.

They changed the laws in my state, and we are now able to use a handgun during shotgun season. They even have a handgun only season. So I am going to give it a shot. I plan on using a .45c blackhawk bisley. A 40 yard shot would probably be about the longest shot. What do you guys reccomend for a load? 8 1/2gn unique with a 260gn swc? 10gn of unique with the same bullet? Last one 24gn H110 with the same 260 swc? First one gives about 900fps. Second gives about 1,000fps. Third about 1,300fps.

With a 260 gr SWC bullet which ever load you shoot the best will work just fine. The 1300 fps load isn't necessary but by all means use it if you like it. I've taken quite a few deer in the 900-1100 fps range & always got complete pass through's.

I shoot the unique load with 8.5gn best. I have a cheap scope on my blackhawk, and the heavier loads seems to screw it up. I am probably going to put one of my red dots on it. Thank you, it is nice to know that the light load will be adequate. I will save the heavy loads for hogs.

1st year I hunted this property, I used a scoped 10" 30-30 Contender... with a 2-7 X Burris... most of the deer were trotting by too fast to even really use the 2X setting... my 45 Colt 10" Contender has a Williams fiber optic ghost ring rear sight & that seemed to work the best for me in this setting... ghost ring for a fast shot, & lining up the fiber optic dots for a more accurate shot

I may just put the rear iron sight back on. Decisions, decisions. With the iron sight, I worry about low light conditions. With the red dot, I worry about the battery being on all day. With the scope, I worry about taking too long.

Did you ever try a fawn bleat to stop them, I've done it lots of times just using my mouth. It's mostly out of curiosity that they stop but it's usually long enough to give you a shot. Did it last year on a forkhorn buck. He was getting too close & I needed to stop him, he was starting to sense something was wrong.

That sounds like a good idea, but I don’t know that I am that good of a hunter. I would probably send everything running. I have seen guys on TV stop them with a grunt call, maybe I will drag one in with me.

Man I love the South, purt near 90 days of modern firearms season, rifle, shotgun, handgun, muzzle loader, bows, whatever your pleasure. GA deer starts 10-21-18 and ends 1-14-19. Archery only starts mid September, but my wife banned bows a long time ago, so between that and the skeeters, I don't bow hunt.
Hope to get over LA and fill a deer tag with my SBE2 running 3.5" 00 buck ahead of a pack of hounds.

I so wish we could get a handgun season here in Oklahoma! We have archery from Oct 1 thru mid January...9 days of muzzleloader (only frontstuffers, no other options) at the end of October...then a 16 day rifle season around Thanksgiving unless you hunt the public land by me and then you only get the first 9 days...then a 7-9 day gun doe only season around Christmas...by the time I get my kids their deer during rifle season, I haven't pulled a trigger on one the last two years, so I'm thinking about taking both weeks off from work this year if possible to be able to try to get my first deer with a handgun
