I own a Ruger 77/357 Carbine that is all that one would expect from a proper functioning light rifle from Ruger. In the past, I've run an old 4X Weaver post on the piece and it has served it's intended purpose.
Need to simplify the sighting/handling system a bit and was thinking of taking a receiver/peep sight from my Ruger Scout Rifle and installing it on the 357 carbine. The Ruger 357 front sight is a banded gold bead front.
Would like to use the Scout Peep which fits in the cuts for the scope mount on both, rather than order a new sight from NECG?
Anyone been there, done that?

No, but it sounds interesting. Both of my 44 carbines (Deerfield, 94 Trapper) wear XS Outdoors ghost ring sights. The GSR sight should be awesome on the 77/357.

Vmaxsplat: Thanks for the reply, pulled the scope off the 77/357 and the sight fits the scope ring cutouts. All that is lacking is to drill and tap the action at that site for the sight screw that is used to anchor the sight to the action. Looks very plausible. Probably gonna find out. The peep sight makes carrying and using so much easier and quicker. Easier and quicker is usually what a carbine is about.

Went the other route--had an NEGC peep from a 77/22 on hand and installed it on my 77/357, intending to use it as a utility rifle and understudy for my Gunsite Scout Rifle. Working so far. I’m interested to hear how your project goes.

Thanks Wadcutter, got to find someone to drill and tap the rifle as I have the sight in hand. Will keep you posted.

You could do a lot worse than the NECG sight. I love mine on a 77, 30-06.

I've decided to purchase the NECG sight and install it on the 77/357. This is going to be my camper gun and I like the sophistication of the NECG unit. Will post a pic of when it is mounted. Waiting on some funds right now.

Well this project has taken an unexpected turn. We recently had a "electrical blackout" and I was reminded of how dark it is without electricity. Was comforted in the fact that all the nightsights on my pistols and revolvers worked quite well. This event caused me to pause in calling NECG and ordering the "peep sight". Then yesterday a friend offered to me his Vortex StrikeFire 2 for $75.00 dollars as he is upgrading to a newer Vortex Red Dot.
The unit is short, clear, no magnification optic with a small red dot. It appears to be a 1 or 2 MOA dot. Dot brightness is controlled by the shooter. Battery life is 2,000 hrs with auto shutoff after 2 hrs. Make sure I have the right rings and this guy will go on the 77/357. Think I will still get the NECG as a back up next month. Gun money gone for this month. Will post a pic of it mounted when it is completed.

Another twist in this simple little story. Just got off the phone with Vortex, I will need a 40 dollar picatinny rail, receiver drilled and tapped for the rail, then the rings.
Back to NECG Peep for me. Will trust in the Good Lord for enough moonlight if I ever need to deal with a camp marauder at night.

I'm thinking a short piece of picatinny rail mounted at the 6 o'clock position on the stock with a TLR-1 mounted on it would solve your problem while being far more useful in low light situations where target ID is needed. You'll also be surprised how well you can see your open sights too with almost all of the light out in front of the sights. I went even cheaper and ordered a Ruger Ranch Rifle rear sight blade and opened the aperture up with a hand drill. I then simply swapped out the blade on the rear sight and installed a red fiber optic front sight. It's not a true ghost ring set-up, but it's plenty accurate and was a cheap alternative to the same plan I had as your original scout sight idea. I thought I had a picture of the sight on my computer, but I can't find it right now. This is a mock-up of how much I opened the aperture... The rear blades can be found cheap on that big on-line flea market near a bay. I'll try and remember to post a picture of the sight on a rifle when I get back home. Hope this helps! Mike The other option is to sent the little rifle to XS Sights and have them install their Ruger 77 Ghost Ring sights onto it. Pricey but nice and CLEAN!!!

Thanks for the ideas. I sent the money off this afternoon for the NECG peep sight. I really like the idea of hanging a WML off the front bottom of the stock it makes a lot of sense as I have an extra TLR 3 that would work. FO in red for the front would complete the set up. Going to shoot the gun with a 180 Grizzly brand 357 Load to see where I am for elevation before I order a different front sight.
NECG peep is pricy but a friend of mine has one on a 6.5X55 Ruger 77 deer rifle and that set up will "shoot the lights out". 10-12 days should have the sight from NECG. Had a cousin who used to take on bears at night with an old 94 30-30 and a flashlight. He was tough but he never got bear bit! Bears loved his lambs.

I have an extra scout sight, as I went a different way than most with my Ruger Scout rifle... now thinking I may have to find something to mount that sight on, or sell it??? This is what my scout rifle looks like today...

I've got two Ruger Frontier rifles in .308 and .358... Until I lost the ability to focus on the Scout Rifle Scope crosshair due to a as of yet uncorrected cataract I had the NECG peep sight on both of them. Now the sight has been removed from the .358 and has a 1.5-5 Leupold is in place on the receiver. The scout scope has been removed from the .308 and now just has the peep sight with a XS white line front blade.
The sight is excellent....

Thanks guys eagerly anticipating the sight from NECG. Sounds like a plan coming together. That thumbhole stock Scout looks like it is set up to shoot. Local areas here are brushy and a lot of timber. Peep sight makes sense. To the south in Mule Deer country 300-400 yard shots on the open canyon walls are the norm. Up here it is close and personal. Have shot deer from 10ft to 125 yds. Only one with a 4" 29.
