I guess I just can't see what a DA 475 L offers over a SA? I'll explain it to you: recoil. ;D Seriously! I have a SRH in .475 and it will most definietly beat the shooter up more thoroughly than a SA shooting idetical loads. Alas, mine is so accurate and shoots so well, that it s my go-to gun for hunting. An honest man. Good to see.

Bad first day on the range with the BCA 500L SRH.... Hammer spring is not up for rifle primers... Thinking the the gun has a ruduced power hammer spring in it... Saw the same thing in my 454 SRH years ago. All my springs were back at the barn. Good thing I am off this week.... ;D

Why LR primers? The 500L has LR primer pockets. Unlike small rifle and small pistol, which measure the same, the large rifle and large pistol primers do not. Yes, I know that some people use pistol primers in the 500L.... I might do so myself some day for lighter loads. However my H110 and AA #9 500L loads will continue to use LR primers. This means my gun must have enough hammer spring for the LR primers.

It does indeed have a large rifle primer pocket but I know of no one using large rifle primers. You will get large pressure spikes with no real gains. None of the commercially loaded ammo uses large rifle primers.

Commercial ammo loaded with LP primer huh? That is interesting..... Looked at Hodgdon and they don't call out a primer... Hornady does specify the LR primer for the 475 but they don't list loads for the 500L. I think I'll continue to use LR primers for my H110 and AA #9 loads..

Commercially loaded ammo like that from grizzly and buffalo bore. Call John Linebaugh and he will tell you the same thing. It has a large rifle primer pocket only because the parent case does. Seriously though, you should be using LP primers.

Looked around at a little 500L data that does call out a primer and LP is what I see... Why does Starline put a LR primer pocket in their 500L brass?

I think it's a holdover from the original spec brass which was cut down .348 brass. It doesn't really make a difference as LP primers fit. I'll bet that is the cause of your ignition issues.

ax, I don't know about pressure spikes from LR primers but in the 500sw I was getting primers pierced with max loads using LP primers but when changed over to LR primers the problem stopped, I must not have been the only one with these problems because 500sw brass is now made with LR primer pockets. LP primers should be fine in the 500L because of the lower pressure.

when in doubt look up John Taffin here's what I found "Top loads for the .500 are normally achieved with WW 296 and proper primer choice is absolutely critical. I have found only one primer that will ignite these large doses of WW296 in cold weather and that is CCI's #350 Magnum Pistol Primer. Other pistol primers tried resulted in bullets stuck in the barrel, large amounts of unburned powder clogging both barrel and cylinder and one memorable round that read a whopping 90 feet per second over my Oehler Model 35P." www.sixguns.com/tests/Tt500.htm

Yup.... That is where I looked earlier.... Gave me what we call a "warm fuzzy feeling".. The LP primer will simplify life.. I may even try some LP primers in my 500WE... I don't see it in my custom Rugers but my FAs are real picky about the slightest high primer and the LR primers can be a bear to get seated really well..

axehandle said Quote"Most of the Big Dawg gunsmiths will make you a 5 shot SRH from a 6 shot copy... My 5 shot BCA 500L SRH is a good example.."
So how does it shoot?
