The fine shot experiment was a failure. The shot is even smaller than #12, which I believe is whats used in 22 rat shot loads. Anyway, I loaded up a few test rounds and the fine shot is too light to penetrate much of anything. I shot it at an empty plastic coke bottle and the only place that penetrated the plastic was where the base wad hit it. The shot just bounced off at 12-15 feet.
Now I need to find a small quantity of #9 shot. That's what I've used with good results before.
VMAX, It's good to see another kayak fisherman here. I never thought I'd enjoy it as much as I do.

Fantastic write up, thanks!
Just wish Speer would add 41 caliber to their line up, asked them too twice now but they don't believe there is a market for them.

Yeah, would like the capsules in 480/475 too, but.. There are little plastic tube with cap thingies used for ice fishing, small crappie ,panfish jigs and lures. Wonder what their diameter like ?

What I tried wasn't even #12 shot, it was "dust" the stuff that's even smaller than #12. This is my Kayak, a Jackson Tripper 12. I used it for fishing, I've done one river float in it, but haven't taken a gun along yet, other than my CCW piece. ![](https://www.stripersonline.com/surftalk/uploads/monthly_04_2017/post-58453-0-32356000-1491355362.jpg)

We've lived on our placehere in N. Texas now for almost 15 years. We've lost one dog, had others bitten that survived and I've ruined a couple of pair of underwear due to encounters with rattlesnakes. I've killed several dozen with .38 Special and .44 Special shotloads. I use #8 or #9, whichever is handy, both work fine. The easist way to get small quantities of #8 or #9 shot is to buy inexpensive 12 ga. field loads. Cholla

Cholla Ain’t that a shame, the best way to buy a small quantity of shot is to break down cheap shotgun shells??? Here in Arkansas, we probably have rattlers but I’ve never seen one. Saw plenty in Kansas and other places we’ve lived. Here in Arkansas we are blessed with copperheads, I have no tolerance for snakes, and absolutely none with poisonous snakes. We have plenty of other snakes too, but the scary ones are the copperheads. Oh, I found a four pound sack of #7 1/2 shot on Amazon for $29, ridiculously expensive, but I did it anyway.

I lived in East Texas for a couple of years where there were no rattlers, but plenty of cottonmouths and copperheads. I still have a scar on the top of my right foot from a copperhead bite, where they cut it in the emergency room.
I won't kill a non-venomous snake as we have too many rats and mice. I kill rattlers unless they're a good long ways from the house. They won't bother you unless you do something stupid or careless.
