Its funny because I was just looking at data for reloading shotshell for my 44 mag/ special.
I always like the idea of having 1 cylinder loaded with shot for hikes.
Might be a rainy day project for me.

Nice write-up. I'm assuming by the target profiles we're after deadly game?

Nicely done and good thread. I've used the capsules to load for a friends 357. Otherwise I've done without the capsule. What shot size did you use and where did you get your shot ? At some point it gets worth just buying a bag like the clay shooters buy. For the amounts I've loaded, I just cut open a few older shotgun shells.

I recently bought some fine shot from a man over on the cast boolits forum, it’s much smaller than #9 shot, even smaller than #12. I got 15 pounds of it, hoping to use it for 38 and 44 special shot loads. Years ago I loaded up a bunch of them with #8 shot (all I had) and have finally used them up. My brother had a place with an especially snakey pond. He carried a Ruger Security Six any time he went to the pond, and used a lot of those shotshells.

Sounds interesting.

If you're feeling adventurous, you should check out this article from gunblast. www.gunblast.com/Snake_Stopper.htmI followed this method and in spite of some leading I get great patterns from both a charter arms bulldog and a 6" Uberti Callahan. I use 5 grains of HP38, cardboard from a primer box as the wad. Then enough #9 shot to fill then seat/crimp a 0.434" round ball at 1/2 its height. I have never killed any animals with this load but it will go through several layers of High density insulation foam each backed by 1/2" Plywood. The total payload weighs 240 grains in 44 magnum brass. I would feel confident with this load on anything up to coyotes at close distance.

I made up, in 44spec, what I called "buck-n-ball" loads a few years ago and told of them here. I used Matt's Bullets 135gr bullet, which is just a round ball with a flat base. Figured, one load, for any varmint from mouse to coyote.

Am needful of some 44 shot capsules. Am curious as to if I seat the capsule out as far as I can for the shortest cylinder per caliber, there should be considerable space between the small charge of fast burn powder and the bottom of the capsule. Hmmnnn... An over powder wad would be needed and then you'll have to figure out just how much space remains and what the weight of what you choose to fill the space with is. Uncharted territory of course. You/we're on our own. Kinda a back burner thing now, but have an interest in a ballistic media that falls between my rice loads and shotshells. Tried airsoft plastic BB's. Got shards of plastic. Need more trials, just the shards might give me what I'm seeking. Launching various media over the years have noticed, that roughly, I seem to get about an inch of spread per foot. YMMV.

He looks like a small pup, you might try seeing if he’ll tolerate having ear plugs in. My Rhodesian wore custom foam earplugs and it helped him remain a hearing dog all his life. He would accompany me to shooting matches, hunting and practice all the time. Many shooters were amazed that he had earplugs, some Even refused to believe until I showed them.

If you try the ones that are attached to each other by cord or string, you can clip the string an inch or two from the plug and may be able to get them down deep enough but still use the cord to pull them out. Scout, would shake his head once or twice after his were put in, and then he was fine. If he shook his head more or during the day it meant they shifted and would need reinserting.

I made up a batch a couple years ago using a mix of 6 and 7.5 shot from old game loads that got wet, loaded into those CCI capsules over a light charge of Red Dot in .44 spl cases. I just eased the capsule down to almost touching the powder and put a very light crimp. Really nasty at short range and didn't make too much noise. I have been wanting to get some smaller shot to play with in it just to improve the pattern density.

FYI for those of us with the SDB presses. On occasion we have to back out a seating stem, and it doesn't thread into the delrin/nylon and it can back out. Get some Teflon pipe tape, a half dozen wraps and your good to go. Jeff
