Robb, this makes me think I should feel bad for the one I got from you... well almost. 😉. Mine has at least $1000 worth of upgrades and no porting.

Any idea if that porting is factory? Most likely, it is. TLA offered porting as a factory option. They farmed it out to Magnaport.

The porting cut appears to be classic Magnaport work in the closeup.

The wood typically used on Number Fives left a lot to be desired. Grover tended to save higher grade wood for his other models, special orders, or people he wanted to impress. Someone here coined the term "Mother of Plywood" to describe the average Number Five grips. It is humorous, and fitting.

There's so little wood used in pistol stocks I have a hard time believing there's much money to be saved in different grades of walnut. However, there might be money to be saved in buying a No 5 with plain factory stocks and having nice stocks of your choice made to fit.

Grover could be penny-wise and pound-foolish at times, best I've been able to tell. Also, he made the Number Five his least expensive gun. One person who worked with him told me they thought he lost money on every Number Five he built. You could pay extra for fancy wood stocks on a Number Five, but they came standard on other models that cost $500 more to start with.
