Along with Aggie's thread about stainless and CCH, I have had an idea kicking around that I hesitated to ask. But since he did a rendering of his idea, mine cant' be any worse! Has anyone done a front barrel band on an octogon barrel? Got any pics?

It could be done, but would involve some work. The best way would be to start with round barrel blank.....say slightly over 1" o.d. You'd have to mill the octagonal portion and leave the blank round at the end. Not hard to do, but it may look goofy. I'm building a 5-shot 1.40" 41 Magnum right now that may get an octagonal barrel. If someone wants to photoshop a banded version, I may be willing to do it (assuming it looks good). -Lee www.singleactions.com

Now there's a different interpretation. I was thinking that the band itself would be octagon as well.

....or you could make it octagonal. Either way, I prefer to machine to band from the blank itself: -Lee www.singleactions.com

I have seen that on a big bore rifle and it was darn sharp with everything integral, quarter rib, front barrel band, sling swivel band and recoil lug. Imagine the man-hours and skill, not to mention $$$. Probably a $3K barrel at least. I think it would look really nice on a "squared up" flattop cylinder frame especially a FA.

I do have a Ruger 44 Anniversary Flat Top I've been wondering what to do with.

I think that looks GREAT, rep1954, and would look even better with one of the longer, graceful ramps leading to the front sight. I'm thinking here of the front sight ramps that Griffin and Howe put on some of their Win M-70 rifles - only a slightly shortened version. Bowen had similar sight bases/ramps in his book and I know I've seen pictures on this forum of some member's sixguns with just such a base.
I'll see if I can find an example of my idea and will post if I can.

How about a dovetailed front sight on that octo-band? I think it would look pretty darn good!

Aggie01 is this what you mean? That is what I had in my minds eye... perhaps a little larger (thicker) and of course the ERH butted up to it. And ditto on the front sight idea ....Does that mean you didn't realize how awful my idea was until you saw the picture? Yeah, pretty much. ;D Just kidding. I have never seen that, but I think properly done, it would look good - flashy.... but good.

Wow, the dovetail in the octoband is REALLY nice!! Would love to see that executed on a Nimrod type tool!
Aggie01, do you mind me asking what application you're using to create those images?
Thank you. Max.
