I am on an S&W kick lately just got a 4" blued 57 no dash 41 mag. Had some bluing loss seller made it sound worst than it was, it's enough so ya don't mind shooting the crap out of it. Will follow up with pics later. Here she is in her ugly, magna ported glory, not crazy about porting, but the price was good.

He is not new to 41s,,,, and yes that is a lot of good information. I have a question for all of you on this thread, and that is have you shot any 41 special out of these guns and how do you like them? Well that's two questions.. A few people thought the S&W in a 41 caliber using 41 special ammo was a good way to go. I agree with them, and would still like to have a S&W 19 in a 41 Special. I want too many toys.

That's one N-frame I'd like to add to the collection. Some say it's the perfect caliber for the S&W N-frame.
I really should have bid more on that 657 snubby I saw on GB a few years ago... darn it.

I have a dedicated .41 Special that Clements made up on a USFA Shooting Master so I have a bunch of brass around.
The only .41 Magnums I have used .41 Specials in are a Freedom Arms 97 and the Taurus Trackers I have. Reason being that cylinders are shorter than most .41s and long nosed bullets like Keiths and LBT Long Wide Nose can not be seated to max LOA if crimped in the standard crimping groove.
At this point I only use .41 Special brass in the Trackers because it is easier to eject all 5 empties at once than Magnum brass. In the 97 I now use Magnum brass and use mostly a MeHic mold that throws solids, HP and Penta Point bullets from 165 to 180 grains. If I want something heavier I have two 250 grain molds that work fine but I just don't use Keith bullets in it.
Before buying some .41 Special brass the lowest velocity I ran in my guns was about 900 fps. Accuracy was one ragged hole at 50' and sometimes at 25 yards...so why bother with Special brass. That said, if someone who owns a .41 wants to run some real target velocity low recoil loads (600-800 fps) then the Special brass would probably be warranted to lessen the dead air space between the top of the powder charge and the bullet base.
I just bought a first generation 1968 vintage Colt Trooper...this may be the perfect vehicle for a .41 Special...

OK I shot it today with 2 mag loads and 2 special loads. I can say I am not happy. I don't like magna porting! it makes the sight filthy, the front sight insert came loose! The magna porting is obnoxious and the hoque grips look nice but not comfortable, 2 other pacs I tried were not comfortable, basically not happy with this purchase. I shoot much heavier loads out of my 4 5/8 NM BH with much less discomfort and blast. I sure w/o porting and descent grips it would have been a better shooting experience but just not happy. I should have held out for a 25-2.

Sorry you had a bad experience on this outing Jim. Don’t give up though. You can’t do much about the porting short of putting another barrel on but the rest can be tuned up to your liking. I hope you find a happy medium with your 57. It’s a great packin’ pistol.
