New guns even expensive ones are sometimes over or unevenly polished damaging stampings. A few years ago I purchased a new USAF. I ordered it directly from the factory a 44 flattop the gun had the premium blue finish which I believe was performed by Turnbull. The stampings were badly over and unevenly polished it had all of the signs of a refinished gun.

Yup... Kings6 and I discussed that this one would be a good learning platform for the forum... Get some of the more knowledgeable Ruger guys to point out what to look for... The guys who are really interested in this stuff need to come over to the Ruger forum and read the stuff about this gun there..
FWIW factory lettered brass grip frame SBHs like this one are very scarce...

Mr. Handle I would like to thank you very much for this thread. THIS is how I learn things and I am most appreciative. Thank you. If the gun was returned to Ruger for refinishing and the conversion kit then, perhaps, Ruger fitted the "New Model" cylinder after a "overpolished" refinish job...... JMHO, Carl Is that type of work something you can find out from Ruger? I mean do they track work on guns like that?

Considering the age of this gun it would have been converted and appropriately marked under the grip frame when it was back for a refinish.... This gun is not marked as converted... FWIW we have a original OM SBH (recessed case heads) high gloss cylinder on the way... I'll post pics when it arrives.... You guys that aren't reading this thread over on the Ruger Forum have missed a lot... Those guys talk REAL RUGER.. ;D Get over there and read... www.rugerforum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=68216

I agree with you Mark. I was thinking the other day that I've started too late and will never get to that level....

Correct cylinder in hand.... Fitting and following pics overcome by the arrival of a Reeder 500L African Hunter... I hate it when that happens....

New correct cylinder was about .010 to long.... Spend a little time with a hard arkansas stone basically doing no more than polishing the tool marks off and it slid right in....

You know, I could ALMOST regret letting that thing go. Na, not really, it was too nice a package for an old pumper like me.
