I put my pre ban colt 9mm on S&W forum for sale/trade for N frames. A guy from MA (ban state). Wants partial trade pre m27 3.5" gorgeous N frame 95%or better, no gold box, he thinks $1200-$1500. I was seeing them sell from $950-$1300, but upend had the box and looked unfired. Any suggestions??

A pre-27, even without the box, is easily a $1200 gun given what 3.5" M27's go for these days. The 3.5" guns have a real following, and the earlier they are the better. A pre-27 3.5" is the closest most of us will ever get to owning a 3.5" Registered Magnum, which was the gun of the FBI during the gangster era of the 1930s. If he's thinking $1200 or thereabouts, he's in the right ballpark.

Actually I found on the interweb a guy last month on the same forum bought the same gun, same condition from a gunshop they wanted $1000, he got it for $950. He said $1200-$1500, I was thinking $950-$1300 depending on box & condition, plus there is something with them about the serial numbers and S prefix.

Gun store prices will often be lower, sometimes much lower, than what the same gun will bring online--particularly to knowledgeable buyers on specialty forums like the S&W forum. If it is a pre-27 it will have a S-prefix serial number.

I agree with oregon45, I don't think the guy is out of line at all for the very desirable 3 1/2" pre 27. If I was looking to buy another S&W that would be one that I would be looking for and that price would not scare me a bit.

I did take a better look at the 2 pics of it, the CCH on the trigger/hammer are worn almost off, pale looking, there are some blueing loss on the trigger guard, around the muzzle/front sight, edges of the cylinder, and right side around the shroud. It's a double edge sword, condition is everything, but rarity with a desirable model and barrel length is to be considered as well.

He also wants to add a pre model 18 22 combat masterpiece 4" , pics to come. Or a 1943 Remington Rand 1911a1 or a late 60's or early 70's Belgium Browning hi power.

The trader has some nice weapons. My SW 18 and 60's HP are tremendous guns. The '43 1911 might also be nice.
Lots of nice choices. I assume you are just trying to figure out the trade value of each. Are you trying to get an even trade or is someone putting in cash plus the weapon?
Because the trader offered up 4 guns, it sounds like he is trying to move some. If you have any interest in the last 3 he offered, you might try throwing in some cash and get a 2 for 1+cash deal. He moves 2 guns and you get a discount.

Prescut I am already getting the pre m27 357 and one of the other guns for my pre ban colt 9mm carbine and factory colt pre ban 9mm mags. He is in MA and can only have pre ban mags & colts. This is an factory original 1980's TA serial #'d 9mm nato carbine. So his FFL will accept it, in 9mm AR's you don't get anymore pre ban than that. So it's a Pre m27 S&W 3.5" and: Pre m18 S&W 4", 22lr or 1943 Remington Rand 1911a1, 45acp or Late 60's or early 70"s Belgium Browning HP, 9mm I don't know which to pick, pics coming later today. I like the pre m18, but I have seen guys have trouble trying to sell them it is another 22, I have a colt 45 and have had others just not war time, and I have never owned an HP. Arghhhh Need help deciding, I'll probably sell the one I pick or trade for anther Ruger or S&W N frame. Jim

Hey Jim,
So now I think you need to look at resale value if that is the end game.
In resale, are you looking to turn it over quickly DOM, or are you going for high dollar. We all know that means how fairly you price it.
The 18 is a superb 22. It's not a 17, but damn close. I have one I really like and never considered that it won't sell quickly. $650 The 43 1911 could go for $1250 like the one on GB just sold with original mags and holster. 9/13 The Belgium HP could go for $ 800. The one on GB has sat for several weeks at $900.
Condition, condition, condition The rand 1911 may be the best for resale. There are always lots of WWII fans, and 1911 fans as well.

Prescut Pres, That what I researched and looked into as well BUT I got the pics, the HP has a lot of wear tough at $800, The 1911a1 was great but they "stipled the front strap" and wrecked the value, the pre 18 looked the best and comes with a period Tex Shoemaker black basketweave holster as well, so I'm getting both S&W's for the trade. Hard to go wrong when you do your homework.
The 18 is a great sixgun. You may have a tough time letting go of it once you've shot it. So many 22's feel like toys. That 18 is a real piece of steel.
Prescut and 2 for 1 trades may be my favorite transactions.
