One of the better bargains I've found in a while. Even though I haven't shot my 338 for a whole now, it's still the rifle I'd grab if I HAD to kill something
Stopped in a couple of Pawn shops today, scored at one.
.338 bullets - approx 160 Hornady 250 gr Spire Points - 50 Speer Grand Slam 275 gr - 25 Barnes 225 gr X bullet
Total cost $20
It'll probably take $100 worth of powder to shoot them all.

Wow, that's a Major score !!! I haven't had a 338 in a while . The last 338 I had was a RUM. But I've had a closet full of them over the years. The 375 Ruger came out so I got some of them. Built another 375 H+H . Then built a 9.3×64 Brenneke. Which is the medium bore rifle that is my Go To. Also got a 375 Whelan Ackley Improved. But , I have a hankerin for another 338 Winchester in a Ruger M77 Stainless Hawkeye . Up here 338 bullets don't set on shelves in pawn or gun shops for long.

It's Elmer Keith's fault that I've used a 338 for the last 25+ years. I went on an Idaho horseback elk hunt in '92 and nothing but a 338 would do. My first one was a Ruger 77 stainless with the boat paddle stock. That thing was miserable to shoot, that stock design and a heavy recoil don't go together. I ran across a Stainless Remington 700 and traded the Ruger for it immediately. I never took a shot on that hunt, but this 338 has taken dozens of Whitetails since then.

Almost all of mine have been Ruger's with boat paddle stocks. I never considered the recoil to be much other than mild. I was mainly shooting 300 gr Barnes Originals@ as close to 2530 fps as I could get them . And 275 gr Kodiak Bonded Core @ 2640 fps. The thing is tho. My other rifles were 416s and 458s . my 458 Win mag is built on a stainless Ruger action with the boat paddle stock. Really not bad in the recoil department. The Zytel nylon that the stock is made from absorbes lots of the recoil. On Chichagof island . The 338 Winchester is a sensible minimum cartridge for deer hunting. Loaded with tough bullets.
