I've always been bothered by the short ejector stroke with a 2.5" 357 Mag. 3" or 3.5" barrels provide a full length ejector, meaning long enough to clear the empty/fired case from the cylinder upon ejection.
In trying to find a light weight revolver for possible daily carry I had to settle for a 2.5" S&W Night Guard. I am currently familiarizing myself with shooting it loaded with a handload that matches the performance of the Buffalo Bore Heavy +P 38 Special. The short ejector stroke will clear the cases of the Specials, but it is aided buy the fact that I've had the gun machined to accept Moonclips. No getting one errant case caught under the ejector that way.
Getting back to the original topic, for Magnum ammunition I still would insist on a minimum 3" barrel and would be more comfortable with a 3.5". I always thought the M27s and pre-M27s with that barrel length were about ideal for a full power Magnum.
YMMV, Dave

Davet, if you can find a 3in. Mod.66 you will find full length ejector rods in them.

I'm converting a SW model 13, 4" to a 3" for easier holster carry in the field and while driving. I practiced the conversion on a old rusty and beat up model 10 that was configured with the same heavy barrel, it turned out great, so when I'm done I'll have a somewhat matched pair 38 and 357.
I miss the 2.5" 19 I had from the 80's, i chose to sell it to pay for a wedding gift for my brother,...then they got divorced and I'm out a damn good gun.

I sold my Model 28 to buy my wife a diamond for our last anniversary- no regrets, she's bought me three guns since then! My only short-barreled .357 probably ranks as heresy- its a Chiappa Rhino, and for all it's weirdness it's a sweet-shooting gun. The wife loves it and uses it for a nightstand gun so I load it with Buffalo Bore SB 158gr. LSWCHPs. I keep a moon-clip in it for positive ejection, but rely on a speed loader or strip for reloads. Same footprint and thickness as a J-Frame, six shots and when I choose to load magnums it's seriously more comfortable to shoot.

The rhino is actually a nice shooting gun, I got a chance to shoot one at SHOT a few years back and I wouldn't have any issue owning one.

With the introduction of the LCR I thought Ruger had the lock on "ugly" but Chiappa has left them in the dust. (smile)

I love short barrels as well, my nickel python was 4", I love 3" N frames, and I too have a m19-3 2.5" but nickel and it came with very rare checkered banana target grips, I have seen other come with them not many but were smooth, they sell on ebay quick for usually $400 avg. my checkered are rarer yet, curious how much they are worth by themselves.

There is something special about the way these handle and shoot. A 2 1/2" M66 & a 640-1 are two favorites here. I finally went to the 125gr Golden Sabre 357 load for both; reduced power with noticeably less muzzle blast, and POA = POI.
A good Smith trigger is hard to beat.

What do you guys think is a good price for a 2 1/2" model 66 with a good leather holster? A friend of mine has one he wants to move but I am no sure what one is worth. I checked closed auctions on GB but not a lot of help there.
