Falling into this Savage bolt gun hole. I hear changing barrel on these things is something a shade tree gunsmith can do.. Any of you guys have some hands on experience to share? What special tools/gauges will I need?

There are savage barrel wrenches and headspace gauges. Not too much to it. Been years since I helped a buddy with it but I remember it was relatively simple.

Very simple. I rebarrelled a 338 Win Mag to 350 Rem Mag.
Took the firing pin out and used a round to headspace.

You can also change the bolt head for different size case heads. All in all, it's pretty easy.

I found a couple of pics yesterday I saved from one of the Savage forums showing the process. Saved them and then promptly forgot I had them. I'll post them once i get back to the desktop.

easy, done it a few times years ago, 358 in, 22-250AI, etc Barrel nut wrench, go & no-go gauges pretty much it. I used oak bocks in a good vice, do hold the barrel from turning.

I can manage it with a few tools, which pretty much guarantees that anyone can do it.
Still have all fingers and thumbs in the bargain.

Oak blocks, some rosin, a good bench vise and a wrench for the nut and your in business. Buddy has several barrels for one of his. A good base and rings goes a long way. He can swap barrels, read his notes, mad just scope and be within an inch of his wanted zero. I swapped a 22-250 to a 358, no problem. Have another project going from 223 to 204 and 20 practical. Jeff

Two nuts? Sounds easy enough.. Looks like most wrenches fit two..

I just changed mine from a 30-06 thin barrel to a heavy barrel 30-06. It was very easy to do. I got all my stuff to swap it over and the barrel from northlandshooterssupply.com/I only intended to buy a few things from them but the guy I spoke to on the phone was a heck of a salesman and I spent about twice as much as I should have. I don't regret it at all. Get a action vice and a barrel wrench to start and if all you want to do is swap barrels out without any little upgrades than that should be all you need.
