New Marlin levergun in 45 Colt caught my eye this week. Cheaper than the same gun in 44 Mag. Rifle length round barrel gun. Do I need this? Do we shoot cast bullets in them?

Does the rifle have Ballad rifling or Micro-Groove? Ballard rifled Marlin shoot cast bullets well from the start but the Micro-Groove barrels can be very finicky to say the least. BUT, they can shoot cast bullets accurately, providing they're sized properly (.001-.002 oversized) & of sufficient hardness. In my experience gas checked bullets cast of linotype gave excellent accuracy.

Round my house things are changing a little. Marlin was the benchmark for pistol caliber leverguns with Winchester second . Then I took a Henry big boy steel and a Marlin micro groove(both in 357) out and shot side by side. I went home and sold the Marlin. The Henry shot every load better and no comparison on loading reliability . The Henry smoothly fed square shouldered wad cutters which the Marlin absolutely refuses to work at all . Even round nosed stuff felt finicky in the Marlin. O well , opinions will vary and change.

This gun is new so I'm thinking ballard rifling... No Henry here. They just don't look right...

There is something to be said for the "Made in America or not made at all" motto though...

It's too bad that the reports that they were doing a 1-16" twist were just a typo on the website. Still 1-38". My .44's still shoot very well with bullets up to 300gr.
I like that Henry is made in the US but they're still ugly.

My 1894CB shoots very well the same 45 Colt loads I feed my several Rugers (Blackhawks and a Redhawk). Varies from mild 255gr loads to hot 300gr handloads and Grizzly Cartridge 300gr stuff. Love that rifle.

Yeah-the market seems flooded with new .45 Colts.
From what I've read on the Marlin forum, new RemMarlin guns have varied in quality, but seem much better now than they were shortly after Remington made the manufacturing change over. Hopefully, you can see the prospective rifle before purchase so that you can check wood to metal fit and the like.
I've just purchased a JM stamped carbine in 45 Colt.
Good luck with you purchase!!
