I got in on the ground floor kinda, with the 6.5" 480 BSBH.. The gun SHOOTS, but not cast bullet friendly yet at this point. Got a Sixshot front sight upgrade. Amstill seeing this as belt worn worthy, but a primary hunting piece, overall. Since I have brass, dies, etc.. a more readily and likely packed shorter barreled 480 is the next natural revolver to drool over and acquire. Hows my logic so far ? The real issue is which ? Go DA an adopt an Alaskan, or get another Bisley gripped SA.. How does the 4 5/8" BSBH compare in bulk, weight, volume to the Alaskan ? To those with 480 Alaskans, since they've been out a while, how user friendly are they for you ? Real world use, not range use. Do you find yourself holstering it, or does it sit in the safe ?

I have owned the 44 and 454, but not the 480, Alaskans. I prefer a 4" barrel personally. But they were both fine guns. I'd opt for the SBH myself as i prefer single actions, or maybe even the BFR.
That being said, if I had a chance to buy a 480 Alaskan and the price was right, I'd buy it.
Or a Toklat. Or a Redhawk 480 conversion... NOW WE TALKIN!!

I would have to examine the barrel if I bought another big bore Ruger. I'm still not convinced they can make a "clean" 454 or 480 barrel. This is from my experience with the SBH 480, I can't speak to the quality of their SRH 480 barrels.

Don't have a 4 5/8" Bisley SBH, but do have a 480 Alaskan. I'm just guessing, but if you are at all concerned about velocity, the 4 5/8" BSBH will most likely give you close to 100 fps additional velocity. Here's my original post on the 480 Alaskan. Might be of some use in helping you make a decision. singleactions.proboards.com/thread/13442/ruger-super-redhawk-alaskan-480The Alaskan feels "bulky" to me. My favorite handgun is the L Frame M69, so of course it's not surprising that the Alaskan feels bulky. Good luck. Paul

I haven't noticed my newer 6.5" SBH barrel being horrible, but admittedly I haven't had much time to shoot it yet... or at least as much as my Alaskan ( owned the Alaskan a couple years longer than the SBH )... both are being shot with my Handloads & cast bullets... looking at doing a 480 Ruger rifle when my McGowen barrel blanks get here... almost wish I had waited for the 4.5" SBH... but admit the 6.5 would make a better hunting gun... but then there is a lot of competition for hunting handguns to find their way to my belt, so the 4.5 would likely get shot much more... BTW... I really do like my Alaskans ( both 454 & 480 ) I have a Simply Rugged flap holster for the Alaskans 480 Alaskan here, with fiber optic sights front & rear... ( I often switch out my fiber optic rods... I like the orange / red for the fronts, & green for the rear... I find it easier to speed shoot in the woods with the front rod not being a color found in nature... I also seem to get less point of impact shift in changing light conditions, often associated with Fiber Optic sights, with the orange in front ) this is a huge possum... makes that Alaskan look down right little

That is a big possum ! Glad you were packing enough gun ! LOL. Got a few on traplines and have had'em around yard and 'hood. Thanks for the input folks. This purchase likely will not be this year. I need to find an Alaskan to handle. Wonder if Coogs or Magman are sitting on one ? They live within a couple hrs drive time in directions doable, to tie in with other trips.
