Local dealer has a blued S&W 29-2 with 6-1/2 inch barrel. Looks like 90-95% blue, but I am not qualified to say. Looks like normal wear with no scratches.
Also has a 8-3/8 inch stainless S&W 629. Looks excellent. Again, not qualified to really judge.
Neither one is desperately needed, but...
Which would be a better addition ?
Neither would be the only S&W 44 Magnum in the vault.

Is the 629 a no-dash, pinned and recessed model? If so, I'd go for it. If not, I'd probably go for the 29-2.

I don't own an N Frame with a 6 or 6 1/2 inch barrel (yet). If I need to pack a 44, I opt for my 4 inch 29-2 or my 3 inch 629-4. If I was going to only hunt with this new purchase, I would go with the longer barrel 629. Assuming either gun would not duplicate anything that you already have, it's a toss up. Of course, I am a fan of stainless... Mark

Were it me there would be no question...the 6 1/2" 29. I really like them in that barrel length. They have a "coolness" factor in my opinion.
I have had two "bad" S&W's in my life, and one was a 629. I know they are good, but that one left a bad taste in my mouth.

The model 29 all the way. Not that the 629 isn't a great revolver. The 29-2 with a 6 and 1/2" barrel is a legend. Ask Dirty Harry!

I too would go for the 29-2 if given the choice.

Yes... in Single-Actions.com tradition, the only correct answer is.... BOTH!
OF course in the real world that isn't always possible unless you have axe or dogs in your handle. Soooooo... the right tool for the job... what would you do with it? Carry it... shorter barrel... hunt exclusively... long barrel would not be that big a deal, but if you intended to wear it around much it would sure turn into a chore.

Kinda like these? The nickle 29 is a great hunting pistol, but neither carried well. I like shorter barrels for carrying, even in the woods, but in a bandolier holster, the scoped 29 worked fine for hunting.
