My max shoots all well. But i get leading shooting 38s with cast boolits. Please take a couple of guesses about what's happening. I am fascinated with what changes from Maximum to Magnum to 38 special. If your bullet is correct dimensionally, then pressure/velocity would seem to be the cause. If enough pressure is not exerted, does the bullet not obturate. Obturation creates a self-sealing effect which prevents gasses from leaking out of the breech mechanism (wiki quote). Hot gases cause leading. What else is there?

"I am going to have an issue with ejection of 357 max cases in the 77/357 that may require some modification to the rifle...” ----GeezerD ***** Whatever you do, don’t taper the chamber. Since the Model 77/357 magazine cannot take .357 Maximum. Feed as a single shot the long rounds. Am not familiar with your 77/357. You may be able to increase bolt throw by trimming the BOLT STOP. If the M-77/357 has a FIXED EJECTOR, you may be able to shorten it. If it has a spring-loaded BUTTON EJECTOR, cut a coil. David Bradshaw David - The 77/357 has a primary ejector that is part of the magazine and when the magazine is removed, there is a secondary ejector that is part of the frame. Both of them are fixed. With the magazine in place, the 357 max case ejects too soon. When removed, the max case ejects with no problem. So what I have decided to do is, ream a long cylindrical throat of .358 diameter in front of the standard 357 chamber using a Manson throating reamer. And then load the 180gr XTP bullets out as far as possible thus increasing powder capacity to 357 max levels. After firing I will be ejecting a standard 357 case. The 200gr round nose would probably work also. ---------------- GeezerD

I chronographed some 357 max and mag loads from my Ruger No 3.
357 Maximum loads: H110 with 180 XTP 1850 FPS Lil Gun with 180 XTP 2100 fps
357 Magnum Aguila factory JSP 158 grain 1700fps
At 75 yards all loads hit POA/POI close enough for deer hunting.

With slow powders .357 Maximum is a forgiving cartridge. Especially since your Lil Gun load drives the Hornady 180 XTP 250 fps faster than H110. it is important to specify charge weights. I have reamed a cylindrical throat in the 357 magnum chamber of my Ruger 77/357 about 3/8" long. And loaded some 180gr XTP bullets crimped in the second crimp groove which gives the same powder capacity as 158gr loaded to the reccomended COL.
The Hodgdon manual lists a maximum charge of Lil-Gun to be 18gr with a 158gr XTP. I started with 16gr of Lil-Gun and then increased it .5 gr at a time until I reached 19gr behind a 180gr XTP. It shows no signs of excessive pressure with a load that is 4 gr above what Hodgdon shows as a max load for 180gr bullets.
This load must be single loaded but should be a good load for deer, easily as effective as the same bullet fired from a 357 maximum revolver. I estimate the velocity at 1850 to 1900 fps. This weekend I will cronograph some of these to get verification of the velocities attained. ------------ GeezerD

I'm not a huge fan of shooting the shorter cartridges in the longer chambers, because of the "carbon ring" ( I have several revolvers that can shoot multiple cartridge lengths, including a custom S&W 610 chambered for 10 mm magnum, & a Dan Wesson 357 Max )
if I'm wanting a lower powered version, I find better accuracy & no carbon rings, by using the longest brass, & a powder like Trailboss... can give me everything from light 38 special, to medium 357 magnum level loads out of the Max case, all with decent accuracy...
