got a call from the neighbor the other evening... she asked if I was home... yup... I'm here... she said I'm running a skunk up your driveway... get a gun...
I looked out the front patio door, & sure enough, her pick up was part way down the driveway, skunk was in full out stinky trot quartering away from the house out in the freshly cultivated black dirt of the field... out about 150 to 175 yards... only gun I had handy was the little 17 Mach 2 that you guys may have heard me mention before... as the skunk was quartering away from the house, I had to hurry... I stepped out & braced off the dog fence, & got off 4-5 shots... pretty sure I hit it once ( by it's actions ) but may have only kicked dirt onto it??? before it made it's way to the weedy area along the line fence... the rifle only has a 2-7 power scope, so I lost it in the tall grass... This was at dusk, & I had just come in & cleaned up from checking on hog babies outside, so I wasn't dressed to chase down a potentially wounded skunk in the line fence...
Like I said... I was using a marginal caliber for skunks at that distance, & it was running at full skunky bore...
I think I hit it once out of the 4-5 shots...how do you think you would have done hitting that size moving target at 150 -175 yards???

At that distance I pretty sure I would have been SKUNKED .

I would've killed that skunk if I had to run up on it with a slingshot! Killed 19 of them last year.

Oh yeah I coulda killed that skunk standing on one leg with an arm tied behind my back..........😇😇😆😆
We blast a lot of skunks while out looking for pigs at night, it's amazing how much air there is around a skunk!!! I think the hair they have makes them appear much larger than they really are and it makes for a tougher shot than you'd normally think.

I'd say you did pretty good, assuming that you actually connected.

About like a big squirrel.

I try to shoot 'em with a shotgun 'cause of the "little body, big fur" issue. But that means I have to get a darn sight closer than I care for.
Been lucky so far, but my Border Collie/Blue Heeler mix took a couple of tries to figure it out, lol!

Funniest skunk incident I've ever had was while looking for pigs at night. I was driving not shooting, but had two buddies in my hunting rig, a Jeep set up more for off-road trail rides than hunting but the open top and cage make for handy standing positions with pipe all around you when standing up so no chance of falling over in case a move is needed. I'm driving with a night vision monocular on, so I have a little depth perception but not much I just kind of get used to what I have, so we are using no white light and there is a big bright full moon so visibility is great. I'm driving across a field with no grass just dirt and light bushes, and I've got a door gunner and a standing gunner in the back. One has an AR 10 suppressed and the other has a 10-22 suppressed so no need for ear protection. I'm driving along and spot a sounder of pigs about 1000 yards off and pick up speed but they make it out of the field and into brush before we can get close enough or they stop. While I'm stopped and trying to decide which way to go from where I'm at. One of the guys says "SKUNK", my response is "WHERE" he replies back with "right there" which is no help at all. I'm thinking ok, it's out in the field 100 yards off or something, but then he gets a frantic tone to his voice and says "it's moving towards us". So I say, well shoot it!!., It apparently is the guy standing because he has the 22 and that starts going off "RAPIDLY". Then there's silence and the frantic sounds of someone trying to clear a malfunction from a gun while wearing night vision. My door gunner, the AR 10 shooter calmly says, "I don't think yo hit it, it's still coming". I still do not know exactly where this skunk is!?!?..........Then the standing gunner yells out, "HES CHARGING,... HES CHARGING".......MOVE". I can't move forward because the nose of the Jeep is about 10 ft from the fence line, and I still don't know where this Charging Skunk is!!!! Suddenly the door gunner opens up with the AR10 and I notice he's pointing his muzzle at a very acute angle down!!!., Crap,......I put it in reverse and punch it, the V8 small block 350 roars, the 40" tires sling dirt, And cow pies and I'm steering while looking in the rear view mirror to make sure I know where I'm steering to. We move back about 75 yards and the AR10 is empty, the 10-22 is still not running and the skunk appears unscathed as it walks thru the fence to the brush on the other side. We laugh and laugh and continue on our pig hunt, when we get together we still laugh about the Charging Skunk, and no one able to hit nothin.

I have two pretty decent, true skunk stories involving extremely unlucky skunks. Will post when get chance.

well in all fairness... I went down to the line fence a couple days later & found I'd hit it twice... I would have never guessed I'd hit it even once as fast as it was running, at that distance, & with only a field rest... SBM... I probably should have built an HMR, as that ammo seems to be around even during the shortages, at least it has been in the past... but at the time, Mach 2 ammo was available... the "boyscout" in me bought 5 - 6 bricks of the Mach 2 ammo, so I've always had ammo for it... & it takes down varmints way out of proportion to it's size... it's probably dropped 75 - 100 raccoons out of trees in the yard over the last 4-5 years... some of them quite large, & from the tops of some pretty tall trees... ... but if ammo doesn't show up by the time I get down to the last 2 bricks, it's going to find it's way to the gun show table... Hornady keeps teasing that they have ammo for it & were coming out with that powdered metal ( NTX ) bullet, but doubt I'll ever see it with them doing the 17 Hornet www.midwayusa.com/product/475663/hornady-ammunition-17-hornady-mach-2-hm2-155-grain-ntx-lead-free-box-of-50

I have many skunk tales. Of course,,, I'm in the critter business. Could I have hit that skunk? Don't know,,, but due to my understanding of them,,, I most likely wouldn't have tried to shoot him. I'd rather trap them,,, and remove them w/o them spraying. Shooting them mostly allows them to relax & release. "Did you hear the one where I talked a skunk into a cage? "

Caught 10 last year trapping. I was kinda surprised to see how small the skinned carcass actually was.
