Two of my son's showed up for early biscuits & gravy Thursday morning then we set out for a Ground Squirrel safari to one of our honey holes. Two of us had handguns & son Shane had his trusty Mauser 22 rimfire with a receiver sight he built a few years ago that is amazing. He can make shots with that gun that just doesn't seem possible.
We didn't have much time because Travis had to get back to work (banker) but in about 1 1/2 hrs we had taken about 65 Squirrels with Shane & Travis getting most of them & me ggetting to be head driver! Travis had my 4" barrel SP101 327 using 118 gr. HP's & also my scoped 32/20 using the same bullet but different load. He was hammering them. Shane got about 25-26 with that amazing little Mauser. They let me have 2 shots with my 8 shot 327 & I got 2 Squirrels.
On the way back I spotted a B&C Badger running down an old fence line towards us & slamming on the brakes Shane poked the little Mauser out the window & the Badger turned & faced us & opened his mouth, Shane hit him just under the chin & broke his spine, he never even moved. It's very hard to anchor a Badger with a rimfire, they almost always get away, not this big boy. The fur is absolutely beautiful, if someone wants him, send me a PM, he's already at the taxidermist & you can do whatever you want, rug or full mount. He's huge, long claws, long fangs!
After taking care of the Badger we went home & at noon Ernie Bishop, one of the finest long range Specialty Pistol shooters in the world showed up for a couple days of Rock Chuck shooting. We got out a bit late but did get in almost 4 hrs. of shooting Thursday & Ernie got 23 Chucks using a 6XC HS Precision single shot using 107 gr. bullets. He got 7 straight right from the start, all from very difficult positions & varying distances. The closest shot I think was 158 yds. & the longest was 530 yds. with winds from 3-8 mph. Ernie could calculate for wind & distance very fast & the Chucks paid a terrible price for sticking their nose over the top of a Lava rock.
Some Lava rock is very hard (Basalt) & some is more like cinders & quite soft, one of the big Chucks was laying flat against some black colored soft Lava & Ernie hit him with his 7MM Dakota & a 180 gr. bullet at about 2900 fps. The bullet went through & exploded a large piece of the soft Lava rock & it was like he had been blown up with some C4 explosives, what a wreck! I believe Ernie holds the world record for 5 shots with a handgun at 1000 yds, it's under 4 inches!!!
On day two we lost the whole morning to very high winds but get a break in late afternoon & in a span of just under 1 1/2 hrs Ernie got 27 more Chucks for a total of 50 using his last round on the last Chuck, and fighting wind gusts up to 15 MPH. More photo's later.
