Recently I saw an ad for a wooden turkey call that looked simple enough for even me to try. I figured what the heck since there are getting to be so many turkeys around here I would spend the $30 and order one. When the call came I watched a short 5 minute video by the maker on how to use the call then promptly stuck the call on top the safe. Shoot I had not even got my license or a tag yet. Earlier today I headed to town and there was a small flock on the neighbors property so as soon as I got back home I decided to step out on the back deck and try the call. I wasn't planning to try and call any birds, I just wanted to see if I could get the call to make a sound that resembled a hen "putting". I moved the sound part of the call over the cedar striker piece and as soon as a hen pur sounded, two toms gobbled from the neighbors woods!
I made a few more calls then stopped for a few minutes when I saw movement along my fence by the corral. The. Ext thing I know there is one long bearded Tom strutting and gobbling along with 4 jakes! I kept back in the shadows and tweaked the call a few more times and in about 5 minutes I had all the flock through the corral gate and just across the fence in my back yard stabding in the shade if my chicken coop! The nature Tom with the 6"-7" beard was ticked and going back and forth up and down the woven wire and hobbling like crazy. He was actually about 25'-30' from where I was in the shadows and didn't have my tag yet! AAARGH! Needless to say it was off to the store for a license and tag right after dinner.

Shoot! Now that I think of it, I have only shot one bird with a shotgun in my life! Right handed with a dominant left eye led me to concentrate on rifles and revolvers while my dad and brother focused on shotgunning. Guess I better find a youtube video on how to field dress a wild turkey!

I found a couple and I really like the skin the breast then fillet both sides and be done. Well except for the heart and gizzard which are my favorite parts of a turkey!

You can give it up now Robb. Once you get your ducks in a row them big fat toms sit back laugh.

Good luck Robb! Last season,,, I had a bird in less than 20 minutes,,, opening morning. This year,,, I've been out several times & the woods have been silent! And,,, if you need a good recipe for wild turkey,,, I have one!
