I've recently begun reloading for my 1895 Marlin "Cowboy" 45-70. Since I bought it used, I do not know the bore and I would like to know if any of the rest of you have experience reloading with this particular rifle. Do I used .458 or .459?
While I'm on the topic, does anyone have a line on custom levers for Marlin? I'm looking for a "hunter" style that I can operate with a gloved hand, and Mule Man seems to be temporarily unavailable. I'd even be interested in any of you who have experience making your own. Thanks in advanced.

You don't say whether cast or jacketed bullets. .459 should be OK for cast but jacketed should be .458. But the bore should be slugged to know the dimensions of that bore. Wild West Guns uses oversize levers on their rifles, you might ask them.

Mule loops I believe is the name,.....they make some really nice levers for guns. Beartooth bullets has a good reference on bullet size and bore diameters for Marlins. Trapr

My marlin 1895 had a .456 bore . I had Dave Clements slug the bore and slick it up. If your going to use heavier cast bullets ,have the throat deepened

I shoot my own cast @ .460. If you look on MarlinOwners forum, there's a fella named Mule Man. He'll take your lever and enlarge it for you. I've had a couple done and was very satisfied. Quick turnaround to. I know another place or two but for the life of me can't remember at the moment. When I do I will be back to reply. BigBore44

My 1895 has a .458" bore and I shoot .460" cast bullets to fit the throat. Have you ever used an enlarged lever loop? I tried it and didn't care for it at all. While you can get all your fingers in there my hand ended up being kinda bunched in there, just didn't work well with my hand. When wearing gloves I just use my middle and ring finger inside the regular sized loop.
