I took several 7 and 8 shot .357's to the range today. This seven shot Mountain Gun has always been one of my favorites. Factory stock, it was whacking bowling pins with the pictured 158 gr. JHP handloads waaaaay out there. One of the easiest guns to shoot and shoot well in my experience.

One of the few S&Ws I had a chance to buy and didn't. If I ever come across one at a decent price won't make that mistake again..

Also a mountain gun fan - don't have a 357. A Highway Patrolman is in the ballpark though

I'd love to find a reasonably priced .357 Mountain Gun!

Can't get a lot closer to the perfect .357 than that.

I think I've only ever seen one in 357Magnum. And I didn't have the money.

I'd have to hold the target in my left hand to get a group like that!

It's my favorite .357. I carry it more often in the woods than any other gun I have. Way better to carry compared to my Highway Patrolman. They are heavy!!!!

Learn something new every day - didn't know it was an L-frame. So 5-6 oz lighter than a Highway patrolman - nice!

Learn something new every day - didn't know it was an L-frame. So 5-6 oz lighter than a Highway patrolman - nice! It does show it's weight reduction carrying it all day. I love my Highway Patrolman but only when I carry it for short time periods. Those old cops that carried them all day were tough!!! I carried a 4" 686 for several years as a duty gun. If I ever had to go back to a revolver it would be a mountain gun. The perfect duty revolver!!!!

I'm most impressed by the accuracy mine exhibits. I often have to try a number of loads to find one a particular revolver likes. This MG isn't finicky. From Day 1, it demonstrated a tendency to put 125 and 158 gr. jacketed bullets in small groups, all at or close to the same sight settings. Paco Kelly was also a fan. He wrote that his own MG shot 110 gr bullets spectacularly. I would like to find his article entitled "A Gun For The Mountains" again.

I bought a few .357 Mountain Gun barrels from S&W for projects a number of years ago. I also bought some 696 cylinders, hands, and ejectors, intending to do a .44 Spl Mountain Gun on an L-frame. Maybe someday I'll decide to do it.
