Keep in mind when you put a rifle caliber in a break open action you cannot get anywhere the same performance as in a bolt gun. The doubles are not able to with stand high pressures they start coming off the face. Len Not true in this day and age. I have a double chambered in 30R Blaser and it shoots a 180gr .308 bullet at almost 2,800 fps. Most double builders will chamber a double in 375 H&H or 375 Flanged and Heym will chamber them in calibers such as 30-06, 300 Win Mag, 338 Win Mag, 458 Win mag, etc. Chapuis will chamber them in 30-06 as well. The builders who chamber for these cartridges will use just about any type factory ammo you specify when regulating the rifle

While I'm sure it isn't as strong as a bolt gun it's still rated for 30-06. Again, many of the complaints about Drillings here are just don't hold water.

As a long time combo gun fan, I've always wanted one. Some years back I ran across a Sauer in beautiful shape, for a price that I found out later was a really good price. Even stranger was that at the time I actually had the money. It was tempting. Honestly I don't remember now if it was a 20 or 16ga, but the rifle was a 6.5x57R and that scared me off. It was a "here and now" deal and I wasn't able to do any research so I passed. The real kick in the pants is about a year later I bought a single shot rifle in 6.5x57R. Doh!

Even stranger was that at the time I actually had the money. It was tempting. Honestly I don't remember now if it was a 20 or 16ga, but the rifle was a 6.5x54R and that scared me off. It was a "here and now" deal and I wasn't able to do any research so I passed. The real kick in the pants is about a year later I bought a single shot rifle in 6.5x54R. Doh! I suppose I was 10 when a friend of my father's brought a german made drilling over to our place. I thought it was fantastic. Must have been my german ancestry. With mr Obama's election everybody was panicking and buying ar's I noticed Internet prices on sporting arms, especially things like Drillings, were really low. So, I started looking, pricing, and selling off many/most of my firearms. At this point in my life I had a whole closet filled with guns. I wouldn't call it a collection. It was more random than that. Long story short several years later I own just three firearms one of them a like new 27 year old sauer and sohn drilling that I hunt and carry extensively here in the arkansas ozarks. From time to time I think about selling it but I just can't justify it. It's all I need to hunt with. It handles like a dream in the wooly booger country we have here. In short I have all I need. Now, if I can just get past "wanting" stuff I don't actually need.

Does anyone have a drilling? What maker, gauge/cal., etc. Hunted with it? Thinking of picking up a Sauer 16/16/8x57R. Hello, I am new to this board. I have an older trumpf kreighoff drilling in 16x16 2 3/4 over7x65r and it is great for me. It is light ,handles very well. It does have a 4x scope and a 22lr incert. I have hunted a lot with my drilling, boar, deer, turkey, squirrel and rabbit, quail and pheasant and others. There are a lot of drillings out there and some are beautiful. I wanted a hunter. It took awhile to find what I wanted. But now i am very happy. I am saving up for a buffalo hunt and I plan to use my drilling. Thanks

i have several. sauer 12 x 12 x 30/06 ....two of these. one has short barrels [ just over 24" ] and is rather handy...i keep it in montana for opportunisitic hunting. it has a zeiss 1-7 quick detachable scope. the 30/ 06 shoots 1" groups at 100 yds the other sauer has longer barrels and has two different fitted scopes ...a 1-5 and 3.5x10 gigantic scope....both quick detachable ....it is just as accurate as the other one. has a fiitted 22 wmr insert as well.
i also have a 12x12 x 9.3x74R , prewar by carl calz....beautiful gun, very accurate as well. others include a collath 9.3 x 72 hammer gun, hardly looks to have been used much and a Halang and Bachner hammer gun [ exquisitely made ] in 16 x 16 x 45/70 ; that gun weighs just over 7 #s
and maybe the neatest of all a sauer light weight [ dural frame] 16 x 16 x 22 LR ......24 " approx barrels, and weighs under 7 #s....a very good bird and small game gun.

I have a JP Sauer & Sohn Drilling as well. Mine has 25" barrels and is 2 3/4" cahambered 12X12 over 5.7x43 mm (222 Rem).
Weight is about 7.5 lbs and is pretty handy.
Makes an excellent turkey gun.
