I have a heavy barrel Remington 700 in 223, that was my FIL's rifle that he took out P dogging several times... I'm having a hard time getting the groups out of it, that I'd expect... & it's a 14 twist barrel, so I'm getting best accuracy out of 50 grain bullets... I'm not of the skill to be able to tell for sure if the throat is going... but expect it is since he used to shoot over a 1000 rounds each trip, through 2-3 rifles, my guess is that this one may have seen some doggie induced heat... he owner & shot this rifle for many years...
I'd like to find a "near" drop in heavy stainless barrel with a 1 in 7 to 1 in 9" twist, & a fresh chamber throat so I can shoot heavier bullets...
I'm having trouble finding such...
I see Shelin offers a new 1 in 14 in that barrel profile but would really like something faster...
any suggestions on where to look???

Some of the early 223's used a 1 in 14 twist and later changed to a 1 in 12.

Magnumwheelman You are right on or off target depending on the bullets that you choose for a given barrel twist rate. Slow twist favors short bullets and fast twist wants long bullets. Consider what performance you want with bullets and loads you plan to use. Then use the Greenhill formula to compute the twist rate. Excellent information in the attached link. There are variables that are explained well. kwk.us/twist.html Greenhill Formula calculator Good barrels vs excellent barrels. A totally different subject. You might want to be fussy with who does the work. There are lots of folks that have tools and ability to chamber and install a barrel. Then there are some folks that are true masters. The results significantly different.
