I will get a picture this weekend l. It's a matte finished 24" barrel and synthetic stocked. It's a utilitarian type rifle in a great caliber. Cool. Sounds perfect. I heard about a few synthetic stocked Rossi/Puma 92's in 454. Hadn't heard of one on the 480. My 20" 454 is stainless/wood HiViz sites. I'd like to have synthetics just cuz.

What would the ballistics be on a 20" .480 Ruger? Would it be like a 45-70 or would it surpass it?

Yeah I can get one built for $370 and up. That might be the route I take. that will be a good one. as soon as i get the money together(i'm disabled from a stroke), MGM will have a 500L with a 23" heavy factory barrel with open sights. a 450gr cast boolit going 1200-1300fps will take anything on. i want to use a 525gr cast boolit to shoot too, cans, bottles, targets...

I have thought a lot about an MGM barrel. Just not certain what to order. I've thought 18-20" would be about ideal but I may go shorter.

Don't have any chrono numbers, but loaded with 420 gr cast it is not near the thump that my Marlin 1895 in 45-70 is when loaded with 550 gr Jae-Bok's. It is a fun gun though and seems quite accurate. Mine is only the second one I've actually held. Tim

I had a Rossi 92 in .480 and a box of .480 from Hornady.
I shot that box of ammo and sent it down the road. Neat gun, but I have no idea what I would have done with it except hog up safe space. It was accurate and the recoil was negligible for the power level.
Fit and finish was standard Rossi.... which is one reason I passed it down the road.
Watch Gunbroker. They tend to circulate there.

I have thought a lot about an MGM barrel. Just not certain what to order. I've thought 18-20" would be about ideal but I may go shorter. i have two MGM barrel(20 vartarg and 6.5 creedmoor) that are 16 1/4" long. i got them both because i wanted to try them as a pistol but i want them as a rifle too. the pistol phase worn out and now i have them both as a rifle. 20 vartarg they both are sub 1/2moa at 100 yards but they have some drawbacks. muzzle blast is probably number 1, while the noise level is number 2. i figured out that the muzzle blast should be away from your eyes, i figure(i say that alot, don't i ) that a barrel should be 21-22" long. i use my encore in a 444 marlin with a 23" MGM barrel that saves me from muzzle blast. the noise level, well you have to live with it, just make sure you use ear plugs. i will replace both of my 16 1/4" barrels, but thats another project.

Well I have two .480s now, the "long" barrel is 9 1/2" so anything longer will be less blast and noise. My first plan was a 15" barrel with a fixed brake so even a 16 1/4" would be quieter than that. My gunsmith makes custom brakes and they really work well in reducing recoil but Lord they are loud.

Then again a 20" barreled carbine with the butt against the shoulder, a 9 1/2" barreled pistol at full extension the muzzle may be around the same distance from the head.

Guess I should have bought the one I saw on the used rack at Cabela's several years ago. I knew they weren't in production long but I didn't know it was only 100 units. The word going 'round the levergun forum at the time was they had a tendency to shoot themselves loose with a steady diet of full house loads. In hindsight I don't know how anyone could shoot one loose fast enough for them to stop production at only 100 units. Maybe Rossi started production before all the information was back on their test mules?

I know the .454 Casull Rossis have a reputation for pulling the mag tube out of the receiver and pulling the fasteners out on the forend.

Here is my Clements built 475 Linebaugh. 20" barrel, 35" overall. From 10 grains of trailboss to cases full of 110, it's a very versatile gun. I have a 3x Leupold coming to go on it. That's very nice.
