Hi guys!
I got my new BFR out at the range yesterday and am very happy with the accuracy and also the consistency of my handloads over the chrony. I did two batches of 25 with Ramshot Enforcer and two batches of 25 with Accurate No.9 with both doing pretty good. I was gonna try some W296, but thought I would ask if anyone here had a good experience with a specific powder. Also... I've been using WLP primers, but wondered if a different primer might give better accuracy, consistency, etc. All thoughts welcome, and thanks for any input you may provide.

My first .475 loved 296 under a 420 grain cast bullet. Recoil was stout, but it was accurate and very effective from a terminal standpoint.

Please try Remington 2 1/2 primers or cci 300. Standard deviations will be much lower especially with ball powders

When I bought my Freedom Arms 475 back in 2001 I always used H110 & a CCI magnum primer, 296 is the same powder now so that's a wash. If you want to down load for play time HS6 seems to work great as does Longshot or Unique & Universal. Standard primers are fine with these powders. A chronograph is great for load work up but sometimes you can still get very good accuracy & some wide velocity changes until you get out past whatever is considered "long" range.
A good trigger is your best friend, that, along with good sights, a sweet spot load & some steel targets make for a very fun day.

Keep it simple in my never humble opinion
W231 or Unique for mild target loads
HS6 for mid level loads
H110/W296 for the heavies
Develop a load for each power level that shoots to your liking and shoot the heck out of it, I rarely shoot the heavies because the mid level loads will do anything I want to in my FA. I scoped the gun for a short while to proved what it could do, with a 375gr LFN bullet it shot into less than 2" at 50 yards from 850fps up through 1400fps, I find the more I shoot the mild stuff the better I shoot the gun even when I go back to shooting the heavies. Just my two cents but a steady diet of heavies is hard on your joints, and nerves, this develops into flinches and once you start flinching its almost impossible to get rid of down the road.
YMMV

Lots of good stuff here. I have some W231 and that could make some fun lighter loads. I didn't know that powder could be used in it, so that's pretty cool. Where could I spot some W231 load data. Is there a manual that has that stuff I can buy? I have Lyman and Hornady's manuals already.

Another vote for HS6. I tried using 2400 to get similar fps and found them a bit more snappy than the HS6, to me anyway.

Primer question. Do magnum primers help or are they unnecessary? Most of the recipes I see recommend the Walls, so I imagine it could go either way.

Generally speaking I use magnums for ball powders and standard primers for everything else.

...Where could I spot some W231 load data. Is there a manual that has that stuff I can buy? ... 8-10 grains of W231/HP38 will net you between 850-950fps with a 400-420 grain bullet (a lil less for the short barrels and a lil more for the long-uns). At that speed, recoil impulse (or lack thereof) seems more important than actual velocity. If it's load data you seek, do the following. Hop on Google and search: mild loads 475 site:singleactions.proboards.com This is telling google to search this forum and this forum only for the search terms. I just ran said search and see at least four threads worth checking out with low and mid-level data for the 475L and 480R. The "site:" modifier is the best way I've found yet to search most forums as most forum search tools are either too crappy, or too cumbersome to bother with.
