I spent a while tonight looking at moderate or reduced loads for the .475 Linebaugh. Do any of you have any favorites you'd like to share? I prefer cast bullets and I don't have any particular preference in regards to weights.
Thanks,

I honestly havent sat down and looked at the numbers comparing a .480 to a .475 but in one of Taffins books he recommended 10.0 grains of Unique with a 400 grain cast in the .480. This has become my general all around plate plinking boulder busting practice load in my two .480's. I dont remember velocities he quoted so it may not be the power level you are seeking.

14.5 grains HS-6 gave me 1067 fps under a 400 grain hardcast LFN in my .475.
My (now tek4260's) 480 Vaquero did 1060 fps with 11.1 grains Herco under a 325 WFN.
Neither load will beat you up.

I cast a 375gr LFNPB bullet that I love to run a wuss levels. 9.0gr of W231 for 850fps or 14.0gr of HS6 for 1050fps from my FA 4 3/4" barrel. I have shot thousands of each.
Keeps the fun in the 475, something that can go away in a real hurry...

I use 15.0gr HS6 with a 385gr WLNGC from Mt Bullet Works. It is clean burning, not abusive recoil wise, extremely accurate and chronos right at 1,100 fps in my 6" FA83. I have used the same powder charge with 350gr thru 400gr cast bullets with excellent results and have seen it recommened in Handloader Mag with bullets up to 420gr.
20.0gr of A2400 will give about the same results, but in my experience leaves unburned powder particles the cyl chambers that has to be blown out to seat succeeding rounds easily in the M83 -- you might get some strange looks at the range doing this.
The 15.0gr HS6, 385gr WLNGC, at 1,100 fps should pretty much cover anything you might want to use it for in the L48.

I also use 14 grains of HS6 under a 400 grain bullet. I use a Mountain Molds built version of the RCBS 400 SWC. I had this mold cut to have a shorter nose than the RCBS version so I could use it in my Freedom Arms without trimming brass. I get 1150 fps with this load and excellent accuracy.

Fowler just shot me the Ross Seyfried article about his #13 revolver. Great article. Thanks Fowler!
Now, keep in mind that Ross' idea of "moderate" might be a bit different than anyone else.
Anyway, he used a 390 grain LBT flat nose with 20 grains of Blue Dot for 1246 fps. He said 17-20 grains of BD (with 350-385 gr bullets) gave him between 1000-1300 fps, and "uniform velocity and fine accuracy."

My favorite is:
425gr WFNGC over 23 gr. of 4227 with a federal mag. primer. Right at 1100 fps from a 4 3/4" FA.

I have no hands on experience with the .475 or Trail Boss powder, but this might be a good match for you, for light loads. steve b

While I've never looked for "moderate" 475 loads the recent acquisition of a trio of custom Ruger 475s to suppliment my FA 475s is going to get me started. I have 345 and 370 grain RNFP Magma Engineering molds for my master caster. My plan will include those bullets in cases full of Trailboss. I've got a NEI mold for a larger 475 SWC bullet that I'll play with a little too. Thinking I'll look into some LBT LFN and WFN molds.. Hate that Magma isn't hooked up with NEI like they once were.. The Magma Master Caster will spoil a caster quick. The Magma mold offerings are pretty slim. NEI has LOTs of choices.

Shot in a Linebaugh custom with 6" barrel
Lee 400gn RF mould Primers were wlp for Std or mag loads
5.0 Trailboss 611fps Great plinking load, negligible recoil and report. I will probably shoot this at the local bullseye league, just to really stir the pot. 12.0 Unique 1084fps very consistant, standard deviations in the single digits 25.0 H-4198 900fps nearly a full case, haven't shot if much other than to chronograph. It would be promising if you only had a limited amount of powder choices or had a bunch of this powder to use. 18.0 Vv 110 vel unknown (1000 to 1100 est) Haven't chronographed it yet. It feels like, and shoot close to the 12gn Unique load. It shows promise as a consistant shooting load. Enough powder to eliminate double charging. The 400's at 1000-1100 are nice to shoot. The Unique load is my "all around" load now, but I wish it filled the case a bit more. Therefore the Vv110 load is more attractive. I'll have to shoot it more to see.
Hope this helps. Todd

While I fully appreciate the tremendous capability of the .475, there is a limit to how many of the full house loads I can take in any given session and I appreciate the FA revolver enough to want to shoot it more. A "moderate" or reduced load is more than enough for anything I'm liable to encounter in my neck of the woods and if I start seeing cape buffalo or elephants from the treestand, I can bring full house loads next time.
I loaded up a few Cast Performance 425g LFNGCs with 9 grains of W231 with good results. Hopefully, I'll have a chance to load some the other loads suggested here this week and get a little more shooting time next weekend.
Thanks for the help.
