This afternoon I picked up a really nice 7.5" 1994 Super Redhawk 44 mag.
It didn't come with rings, though I have a variety of Ruger rings laying about. For the price I paid it wasn't a deal breaker !
I am looking at ordering a Weigand rail for it to make it easier to change optics. The heaviest I will use is a Burris 2-7 x 32, and most likely it will wear a 30mm Ultradot.
My question is would it be worth the added beef and security to use the 454/480 version that uses the rear sight mount?
Has anyone had any issues with the standard rail that just uses the scope mounts?

After a lot of thought and consideration, I ordered the 44 mag version which allows the rear sight to stay in place.
I figured it should be strong enough, and keep the rear sight in place for use in the event of an optic failure.
I put a Bowen Target sight on the SRH today and wouldn't want to remove it.
I have a Weigand rail for my Bisley Hunter also. I have opted not to use it since I got 30mm rings for the Ultradot 30 it has worn for the past year, but I will be putting the rail on that gun also so I can readily exchange optics between the SRH, the Bisley Hunter and my Ruger Scout 308.

I usually take my pictures outside in natural light, but pretty darn cold and gloomy right now. Should have things pieced together by the weekend when the rail and some other trinkets start showing up for the SRH.
I am taking it to the range tomorrow for some first impressions with the irons.

I saw a Target Grey .480 with 7 1/2" barrel for under $700 on consignment at my local LGS not long ago. I asked to see it and while looking it over the guy went into the store room and came out with a Bisley in .480. I walked out with the Bisley . BUT I have been thinking about the SRH ever since. I had never handled a 7 1/2" SRH, I had always thought they looked too big and unwieldy but I actually thought it balanced very well and didn't FEEL near as big to me as they look. Wondering what your thoughts are on paying $650 or so for a lightly used Target Grey model or should I spring for the price of a new Stainless gun? Either one will be in .480 but the used gun sure didn't seem like it had seen much use, or was well taken care of if it did. ETA: Also I bought my dad an ultra dot rds for Christmas and added one for my own use with the order. I know even if I buy the new gun I will need 30mm rings anyhow. Will I need a high for the front and a med for the rear, or med/short? Thanks,

I had never been enamored with the look of the Super Redhawk compared to the Redhawk, but if the trigger could be as good as my GP100, I thought I could learn to love one. I also really liked the grip options for the SRH/GP.
Well, it was a used Target Grey 480 SRH that planted and watered the seed that had me watching for a 44 SRH for a while now.
There was a nice 480 in a lgs that was offered to me for $625 out the door this spring. I went in just about every day to fondle it while I was researching what it would cost to feed it. I was gone on vacation for a week (the reason I was keeping my money in my pocket, biding my time). When I went back in, the 480 was gone.
I decided that I would keep myself centered on 44 mag for the time being, but also started casually keeping an eye out for a nice SRH, which I finally found for less than they were asking for the 480 SRH.
My primary large revolver has been a 7.5" Bisley Hunter 44 that was worked over by David Clements earlier this year.
---------------
Especially if you are already shooting 480 in another gun, YES, I think a used 480 SRH is a great gun when you find one for under $650 (and they do show up for those prices here and there). I personally love the target grey finish myself.
On a SRH, a 5K (high) and 4k (medium) set of rings will work perfectly for an Ultra dot. Unfortunately Ruger doesn't make a 3k (low) ring in 30mm or that would work great combined with a 4k (med).

I'd love to have me a Target Gray 480 SRH!!! IF anyone has one and would like to trade for a SS SRH 44, or TG 454 I'd be interested... BigBore44

Like I say it was on consignment, I think they had $690 on it but I'm sure I could get it for $650 or less. I may go make them an offer.

I haven't. I had my first day off in over two weeks today and spent most of it sleeping.
I put the Weigand rail on today with an Ultradot 30 in Burris Signature Zees.
I took it to an indoor range last week just using the sights at 25 yards, and was really happy with the way it shot so far.

My two SRHs are really accurate. I was at my local outdoor range this week with my bro. They have steel targets out at 200 and 300 yards. Using my .45 Colt+P ammo (250gr. Nosler JHPs at about 1,200) in my .454 SRH, I had him spot the 200 yard steel target while I fired from a standing position. I hit the steel 4 out of 6 shots. I wish that was me, but I think the accuracy of my SRH is the biggest contributor.

As soon as I brought it home I cleaned the barrel and started sending pin gauges through it, and it has no thread choke I can measure. The .417" pin falls through from it's own weight, and the .4175" won't even begin to enter the muzzle which made me pretty happy after all the fire lapping I had to do to my Bisley Hunter.
Having only shot mine one session at 25 yards with the Bowen rear sight, I am pretty happy with the accuracy so far.

A grainy indoor shot of the SRH as it is right now: Too cold out for better lit outdoor shots, and my real camera's are at the other house. Mods so far, Hogue Tamer grip (it came with a Lett grip), A lighter trigger return spring and light polish of hammer. trigger surfaces, the Weigand rail with Ultradot 30 and a Bowen rear sight (Bowen front sight in transit). The Weigand rail is quite secure, but the rear screws interfere with being able to slide the optic on and off for fast changes. It requires taking one of the rings apart. It is a little disappointing, but needed to keep the rail height close to the receiver. I will probably end up mounting the Ultradot in factory rings down the road.

I ended up getting the used target grey model I mentioned earlier. I have an Ultra Dot 6 that will go on it once I find a load I like with the irons, and some 30mm rings. Shot some factory Hornady 325s from it and all went well though it is too cold to put the thing on a bench and do any real load development. Mine came with the old style SRH/GP 100 grips and they are a little unforgiving though I like the size. I have a Hogue Tamer coming also.

Nice find ! If it came with the 1" rings Ruger will swap them out for the 30mm. I have just aquired additional rings so far, but their generally not super cheap.
I like the tamer grip, as it actually fits my hand and point shoots well for me (unlike the Lett style grip which points high in my hand). And the absorber actually works too.
