seems the idea now, is to jam as many cartridges into a magazine as space will allow... no worries if it compresses the spring to literally flat... not talking your regular capacities, specifically the ultra high capacity magazines... ( for example... something like the PMR 30... which seems like you're pushing the bottom cartridge into the base of the magazine to force the top cartridge between the lips ) I know that "springs" are not supposed to be weakened by compression, but when forced flat ( from over compression ) if they fatigue??? would seem if leaving these uber capacity mags loaded for long periods of time, holding back one or two cartridges may keep things working smoother, longer... your thoughts owner of a PMR -28

I remember reading about a study done on at-15 magazines where the old thought was to load 28 rounds in a 30 round magazine to help with springs wearing out, and that leaving a magazine fully loaded was hard on the spring. IIRC, the study showed that the process of repeated loading and unloading--firing sequence--is what was wore the springs out. IIRC, the study left fully loaded magazines as is for several years with no ill effect.

I'm familiar with that thought, & I don't remember ( I don't currently have an AR ) feeling like I was forcing the bottom cartridge into the magazine floor plate, back when I did have an AR, to force the top round in the lips... my PMR-30 feels that tight, as does my 15 round 10 mm... those "extra tight" magazines are the ones I'm wondering about, if they might be flattening the spring to the point of early fatigue???

In USPSA competition,,, many folks have magazines that make inserting "just one more round" into them is hard. I do not know of any of them that leave them that way,,, and most also replace springs at regular intervals. Does it make a difference? Not sure. But I don't leave any of my 15+ mags loaded fully ever. If I'm going to carry one of those,, (which I don't do often,) I top it off before I head out.

I missed going to Viet Nam by just a few years and was warned by many to download to 28 rds.. Here, have a nice AK, and while never having a problem yet..I'll go with the advice. How much is enough ? If nastyness on the horizon, top off then.
