A very dear friend of mine apprenticed under him for a couple of years and I got to know Steve fairly well. I have a couple of guns by him, a left hand flintlock fowler, and a completely reworked Valmet O/U 20ga.
Probably one of the best overall gunsmiths in the country...if you can get past his considerable ego and extreme mood swings.

I never could afford to work with SDH on a complete rifle. I would have wanted a single shot based on an English pattern. Hell, I still want it and still can't afford it. Instead, I worked with Tom Burgess 20+ years ago on several barreled bolt actions and had them rust blued by Maurice Ottmar and stocked in fiberglass. I have one left-a .270 Winchester based on a G33-40 action.

SDH has done some nice Dakota M10s I'd love to have.

The book "Custom Rifles in Black and White" is a classic!
It was out of print for many years (maybe it says that in the add, I didn't look).
When I called to order the books he seemed like a really nice guy and he sent me some pics of some handguns he was working on...
All I could say was WOW!
Roy Bedeaux, the rifle smith in Albuquerque that did much of the metalwork for Dale Goens suggested that I look at Dodd's book to come up with ideas for custom touches.
Isn't he one of the contributors to Bowen's online magazine?

I don't have his custom rifles in black and white, but both Double Guns and Custom Gunsmithing and Fine Gunmaking: Double Shotguns are very well done and give some good insight into what goes into fine custom long gun work.

The link on his page, Petrov pages, has very good info from mr. Petrov about the much maligned 400 Whelen.
