I have a 1974 Vintage Marlin 1895 that I've had for a long time. I don't care for the long barrel/short magazine combination and don't care for the micro groove rifling.
I also have a 24 inch Octagon barrel from a Limited edition. I would like to have this barrel cut to 18 inches and a matching length magazine tube fit. Any thoughts on a 'smith that would do this at a reasonable price?

My buddy has had a bunch of work done on his Marlins here and he's always happy with the work and turnaround time. BigBore44

Would like a 20" barrel on it.

Grab the barrel from Aggie. I'm only going to do this if I can get it done fairly cheap.

Warhawk, the most economical way to go would be sell what you have, and buy what you want. I think what you want is an "SBL", or a cut down cowboy. The octagon barrel you have would have to be reworked, also the forearm would have to be reworked. It is not as easy as one might think.
Woody, his take off barrel would be the same way on your guide gun. You need to talk to a gunsmith who knows these guns before you buy parts for a build, so you don't end up with parts that you can't use. All Marlins are not exactly alike with different size holes in the barrel. Some parts will work on all Marlins and some only work on specific models.
Good luck, I hope you find what you need. Happiness is a big bore levergun to shoot stuff with.

I've got a custom Marlin in 50 A.E. that was converted from 44 magnum... ( thought it would be easier since the bolt did not need to be modified ) it was a lot of work... but most of the extra work centered around the fatter cartridge, & the much heavier recoil... a shop that does this kind of work would be best to tell you what all you need for your mods... good advice to check, before buying parts...

Happiness is a big bore levergun to shoot stuff with. You're probably righ. But I won't get rid of it, since it's a pre-safety 1895. It shoots great with jacketed bullets, but try as I might I can't get it to shoot cast. So it gets fed a lot of Remington 405 JSPs.

There is also the 1895 Cowboy 18 1/2" octagon barrel from the factory.

Man that would be a great swap! I bet a good machinist could cut the octagon barrel from the back and make it fit, if it didn't. Turn it down, thread it, rechamber. I cant see that being too difficult. I'd ask around locally. Any of the nationally known smiths are going to be pricey.
I bet there's a smith in your neck of the woods that knows leverguns and can make what you want happen.
Cutting from the back also saves you the pain (and expense) of having the dovetails recut for front sightand mag tube hanger.

So it gets fed a lot of Remington 405 JSPs. *** warhawk.... inquire with Tank Hoover on his experience in shooting POWDER COAT cast bullets in Marlins with Microgroove rifling. (For newcomers, Microgroove rifling represents Marlin’s foray into the button rifling process, Microgroove easily discerned by the many shallow grooves squeezed into the bore by carbide button. The less metal you have to displace in pushing, or pulling, the carbide button, the easier it is, and, theoretically at least, the less chance of distortion in the finished barrel.) As for the traditional Remington .458” 405 grain jacketed soft point for the .45-70, loaded to 1,300 fps and safe in the old guns, the deer hunter need look no further. As for cast bullets, it may be that the POWDER COAT provides the tiny teeth of Microgroove rifling just enough skin to hold on. Pursuit of an accurate cast bullet from your Microgroove Marlin should include POWDER COAT. Listen to forum members----to thus engage a smith knowledgable in lever action work. A young gun hand must learn that the landscape of “gunsmiths" has long been sprinkled with butchers eager to jump in way over their head, and to separate you from your coin.. David Bradshaw

Thanks David... These are the words of wisdom we come here for. I'm sure most of us wondered why.. FWIW there was a custom barrel we saw in PPC guns that had the Micro Groove look. Company's name was APEX. I had a gun built by one of the old head PPC gun builders, Ken Eversull, that had one. It was a fine shooting gun.. Shot as good as any Shilen or Douglas barreled PPC gun I ever owned.
