Around here it's Magpie's & they are very smart birds & you only trick them once. We have crows too but Magpie's are bad about raiding the dogs or cats food bowl, even if you hide it. They are always cruising the roadways looking for road killed deer or elk, rabbits, etc. We live in town & don't have any pets but one of our son's lives out & he is always whacking Magpie's with one of his many 22's but hitting one is like shooting a white rabbit in a snow storm....hard to do! When I was a kid we would build a cage out of chicken wire about 6 feet square & 4 feet tall & put some food inside & cut a 6 inch hole in the top, the Magpie's would see the food, drop down inside & you just waited until you had about a dozen or so & then you moseyed (yes that's a word) on out there & killed them because they couldn't fly back up through that hole. Once you did that it would be a month or more before the cage trick would work again, very smart, much like Callshot!

They will sit and squawk all day. You pull out a gun and they are gone. You don't even have to shoot at them. They will make noise until they see someone with a gun.

...When I was a kid we would build a cage out of chicken wire about 6 feet square & 4 feet tall & put some food inside & cut a 6 inch hole in the top... Rumor has it... That if you make a cage like that, but smaller (about 3' or 4' square & 12" to 18" tall) & locate the hole on the bottom... Dig a small trench that goes from the hole to the outside of the cage & then sprinkle some bird seed along that trench leading to a pile of seeds inside... Then wait until several Quail are inside before you run up to the cage waving your arms & making noise... They will attempt to fly away, but are now trapped. Yep, rumor...
