it's pretty tough to do anything at close range... camo or not, if you're being stared down by keen eyes... at that point you hope "the flag is not up" & that they turn away to look at some other noise, whilst you silently draw, or move the gun into position

Well Dick,, I've had deer bust me in the past,,, for one reason or another. Not sure if it's a true statement,,, but I'd rather not test it by not doing a bit of camoing. Besides,,, around here,, deer get close before you ever see them. Lots of thick stuff to find the good deer.

Tyrone, if that thick stuff keeps burning in your area you're going to need a longer barrel on that 7/30 that's for sure, camo or not! Good luck.

Hah hah! The area on fire is a place I USED to hunt. Property got sold, a tract got put into a State park, and as such,, closed to hunting. We USED to keep the roads clear to access hunting. But since the closures,, the roads are all blocked,, or were,,, until the firefighters had to bulldoze them open to get access. Once it's all over,, we still won't be able to hunt it.
That fire has been a rough one. As of this morning,, about 4500 acres burnt. Small by western standards,,, but in this area,, very big. Combined with rough, steep terrain, dry conditions, it's long way from being under control. So far,, no structures affected,,, (but that may change today.) Nobody hurt,,, except minor injuries to firemen working. My BSA Troop owns a house on Lake Lure, and we opened it yesterday to the firemen as a place to crash, cook or just relax. Many of the firemen are saying this fire is harder to fight than any of them they've fought out west. No rain in sight,,, 19% contained, burning in 3 counties, and the only road through here has been closed for 6 days now & they say likely 8-10 more days of closure. Nope,, no hunting in this area,, but the bear & deer have moved out. Where they are going,, just as thick!

I think it is a bit of a non-issue. As Snyd mentioned, it's much more important to move carefully and to play the wind. JMHO

I'll say it's a little thing, like double knotting your hunting boots, like being sure sure compass is on board, like putting fresh batteries in flashlight, like well, you get the idea. Its a small thing, for some piece of mind that doesn't cost much and is easy to do, so why not ? Yes wind and movement more important.

Back in the days I was semi serious about predator calling, I camo taped / painted everything. Took a leap of faith to do that with expensive guns scopes but came off fine later.
Now, I can't even keep track of the shiny stuff!

Fwiw: I've never camo painted one of my hand guns deer hunting and haven't spooked any as a result - to my knowledge. If I was doing a high dollar hunt or going after something special though, I might want to stack the odds in my favor as much as possible.

I kind of thought the shiny gun thing was over played a bit when we were in Africa by the PH's, most of the time we were in some type of cover. It's not very often you walk out in the open if you're hunting with a revolver, at least I don't. But all animals have amazing eyesight, especially birds, they can spot movement as good as most any big game animal. If I didn't know better I'd think a hawk could see around a corner.

Here, the only animal that re-acts to my stepping up to the back window are crows. I leave out the screen in that window, just in case. Crows no longer on the shoot on sight list. That list seems to be getting shorter as I get older. Back at home, Mom used to holler down the hall if some kinda varmint was in her garden 60 yds or so from my back bedroom window. Left screen outta that window too ! Crows and woodchucks and such were not allowed in Mom's garden.
