Went out to the desert to have some fun with my shootin' irons and my scope, a cheap BSA ($85), started becoming unusable as the optical view became distorted. No worries, I thought, I'll take it off and use the iron sights. Then I noticed the rear adjustable blade had been cracked and broken off by the scope making contact with it. I guess the recoil has killed my scope and my open sights! The .454 Casull be a harsh mistress!

Got a new rear blade sight in today at the local gunsmith. He even installed it for the low price of $7.44! I am a happy camper right now.

So do you wear one of those Kevlar flak vests like the bull riders do when you shoot it?

So do you wear one of those Kevlar flak vests like the bull riders do when you shoot it? I probably should! I do wear weight lifting gloves as I find the padding in the palm is much thicker than the average shooting glove. Since my scope is dead, I was thinking if I want to put on another optic. I think if I do I should go Red Dot as the scope was heavy, cumbersome, and difficult to acquire a target with in terms of time. Any suggestions on a sturdy red dot for the Ruger SRH that is good quality and can handle the .454 Casull's beastly recoil? Or do you gents think that I should stick with open sights?

The problem with "dot" optics on a SRH is spacing of the scope rings. I saw a picture of an offset 30mm ring on here a while back, not sure who makes it tho. If you want to use a red dot I would suggest a Ultra Dot with the offset ring or a Weigand mount that secures to the factory dovetail scallops and rear sight screws, you can then use normal Weaver rings or the ones that come with an Ultra Dot. There have been discussions on here before about these rails and all I can say is mine has held a Burris 3x7 on my 454 SRH for about 15 years will full power loads without a problem. Also if you want to continue using a scope you can forget the cheap ones, the 454 will eat them.

I "think" maybe Warne or Weigand makes a Weaver/Picatinny type mount/base that secures to the two factory scalloped cutouts of the SRH. Than you can use any Weaver type ring/mount you like... What kind of load are you shootin in your SRH?

I bought a cheap one mainly to decide if I liked the scoped revolver set-up. I always knew that the .454 would eventually claim it's life.

Cast Performance WFNGC, too. I have usually found using W296 is best.

Kool. I am also working with that 335gr Cast Performance bullet and the 270gr ThunderHead from Penn bullets... Will be trying them both in Colt & Casull brass with the SRH. Probably be awhile to really see what they are all doing now that deer season is upon me. Hope to luck into an accurate load quickly so I can use it this year If not the 44 SRH will get the nod... I used an Ultradot 30mm red dot sight in Ruger 30mm rings on my 480 Super Redhawk and it worked perfectly. No need for extension rings or adapters.

I have used the Leupold DeltaPoint on a 44 magnum, 45 Colt, 454 Casull, 500 JRH and 500 S&W and for the past several years one has been on a 1911 in 45 ACP full-time.
Myself, I don't much care for the red dot on a revolver, as they sit too high for my liking. I think most red dots (heads-up display) sold today will hold up to whatever recoil you can tolerate - they have been vastly improved over the past couple of years.

Groo here The 454 is famous [infamous] for killing scopes. As are most "super Magnums" or Hand Cannons [Tc's] Only best quality [$$$] optics will standup.
