Never a big AR fan and haven't bought my first can... Yet. However we do have a few on the range. One on a SBR and one on a Piston AR. The single biggest revelation is with the piston gun. From what I understand the big claim to fame for the piston gun is that they run cleaner and cooler. This IS NOT the case on our suppressed piston rifle. It looks like the can is blowing trash back down the barrel. The lower assembly is nasty every time I open the gun up..

Having owned ar's in all the varying operating systems, piston guns are a lot of hype in my opinion. The dirt and filth regardless of the operating system is due to the added back pressure of a can. One can buy adjustable gas blocks and even gas adjustable upper receivers, but ultimately there's no true way around the filth. As a lefty shooting my 11.5" with can results in me resembling a chimney sweep.

A can will make any of the run dirtier of course. I don't have any piston guns though. It sure makes them more pleasant to shoot though

Having run AR's in competition and with Cans for animal abatement for the last 18 yrs.............. Piston AR's are nothing new, the disadvantages are forgotten and they seem to come back every 20-25 yrs. They do not run cleaner they only deposit their grime in other places than where we normally find it. In the case of a can the back pressure tends to keep the carbon in the barrel and back into the action. Cases will get sooty much sooner, I find that in order to maintain feeding and function, I tend to run only 10-15 rounds thru my guns without cleaning. This works out well for a night out shooting pigs, coyotes or feral dogs, but trying to go a full weekend without cleaning leads to malfunctions. Those are a pain to deal with at night with little or no light to illuminate the problem. Most AR's that are stock configuration are over gassed, add a can And they are really over gassed. This is where an adjustable gas block is handy, I run mine so that when not canned the cases just come out of the gun, then when it is canned they are thrown well clear.
