my 500 linebaugh quest has come to a complete stop in the road. to remind you, it will be a tc encore with a 23" barrel and it will take a 450gr lfn about 1200-1400fps that will kill a deer/black bear out to 100-125 yards. i may try a 500-530gr cast boolit, just for giggles, but it is far off.
the rifle twist is what stops me. will it be either a....
1 in 28" twist that MGM barrels or a 1 in 18" twist that bullberry barrels make?
i'm not a rifle twist guy, i just shoot them. when people start going the greenhill twist........i find something better to do. i'm a big fan of MGM, they do excellent work. i have not tried a bullberry barrel but i suspect they do the same.
so will it be either the MGM or the bullberry? or am i worried about nothing?

A 450 at 13-15? What load do you reckon will get you there, and what pressure are you expecting?

i'm going to use either 2400(24-25gr) or blue dot(19-20gr). what i am guessing it will be around 1200-1400fps.

The Winchester 50 caliber 1886 twist was 1 in 54. Worked well with 450 grain bullets on down in weight. Your 500 grain slugs may take a bit faster twist than that.

I reckon 24-25 of 2400 under a 450 will get you about 1150-1200 out of a revolver at the top end. In a conversation with JL, he called that load "about max" in revolver. You might get a few more FPS out of your 24", but that's pushing pretty hard and I can't imagine a TC is much stronger than a NMB (?).

i am going to try 2400 starting with a 21gr charge ending with a 25gr charge. it should end up like 1500+/-fps. i know that a tc encore can do 60000-65000psi while a ruger sbh goes roughly 35000psi?(i'm guessing).

You can't go 65KSI in the Encore with a .500 Linebaugh. You are .040 less meat under the scope mounting screws. Case head thrust on a .300 win mag at 64 KSI is about is 14K lbs. You will equal that same case head thrust on the .500 L at 48 KSI. If you want more .510 performance in your Encore than you an get with published .500L loads, please look at the .50 AK.

I used to shoot 465's at 1300-1350 form a 6" barrel, though that wasn't with 2400. I don't doubt you could gain a bit more with a longer barrel. 23" might be more than you need though.

I guess the only point I would try to make is that a 450 grain cast bullet from the 500L at 1300, or 1200, or 1100 FPS is easily capable of punching a hole clean through anything that walks North America. No need at all to try to red-line it, no matter the platform you choose.

i thought about the 50 alaskan but .510" boolits you don't need the velocity it produces. i was thinking, if a 450ish gr boolit can do a hole at 1200-1300fps, i shouldn't worry so much about it.
i do like the 500 L, it seems like it can do a bunch more with less pressure and that means less recoil.
