I have been casting bullets for about 40 years with an old Lyman single cavity 429421 in the version with the rounded grease grooves. I know Elmer Keith was not happy with this change in his design but bullets from my mould have always been very accurate.
I have decided to treat myself to a new Lyman 4 cavity mould and notice that they have returned to a design closer to Keith's original. Does anyone here have this new "old" design and how does it work for you?

Other than having to give it a good sharp whack on the handle hinges to get the bullets to drop out.....no problem at all, the bullets are very accurate and if you use 2 of them you can cast all day without stopping to let the mold cool off. The LBT aluminum molds work even better in this respect but still need a whack to get them to drop. Those sharp cornered grease grooves don't want to let go.

Like you I have the old style with the round lube groove, I've had it many, many years & I doubt anyone would say there's a difference in accuracy. The square bottom style held more lube but with the excellent lubes we have today I doubt thats a factor, I know I've never shot a load hot enough to run out of lube (LBT soft)

Groo here Along with sixshot,, Remember that Keith [hats off please] was still testing at a time when Black Powder was still used and all the lube you could get was the name of the game and some times more....

Good points All. I have decided to splurge on an LBT mould becuse it is aluminum and will be custom made for my Ruger Flat top.
Thanks for the feedback!

Something to keep in mind is that Lyman molds are notorious for dropping small diameter bullets and that seems to have gotten worse over the years. I got one of the new 429421 molds and couldn't get it to drop any bigger than .426, I sent it back and they recut the block but I still could never got any bigger than .429 . If it were me I would look at the LBT Keith mold, it will drop perfect bullets and you can specify the diameter you want when you order the mold. Good luck

What is the total length and crimp groove to nose length on these bullets?
