i know this is a dumb question but i have to ask. how much fps do you gain going from a revolver to a rifle? i know that fps is not set in stone, but a "guesstimate" should be "close enuff for gubberment werk."
i'm going to buy a 500 linebaugh in my tc encore with a 23-25" barrel(MGM barrels). i have found ballistics for a revolver but not a rifle(fps). i think that 1300fps+/- should be about right for shooting a whitetail/black bear at 100-125 yards. i haven't found out which yet but it can be a 450gr kieth swc, 510gr lfn pb or a 525gr fn gc and the alloy is lyman #2 or water quench ww. the powders i have are trail boss, unique, titegroup and 2400.
thank you!!

have you tried "balistics by the inch"... even if they have not tested that cartridge, you could use a similar cartridge for a good idea...

Some cartridges will gain more than others I think. My .257 Jackrabbit gains about 600 fps.

Groo here The higher the pressure the round the more % gain. 38 spec,44 spec, 45acp ,45 colt not much 150 to 250 fps. magnums, 350 to 500 fps. Depending. I would look at the 480 ruger, for a guess-t-ment

I ran some trials in Quickloads, with the 450 grain bullet at 1304 out of a 5.5 inch barrel and 525 grain at 1207 from the same barrel. When you run the barrel length out to 24 inches I get 1674 for the 450 and 1560 for the 525. I chose H110 loads that showed close to max. If you want to PM the exact loads you'll be using I be happy to run the comparison.
Quickloads is not the final answer but that should be fairly close.

It's not just barrel length - you're also eliminating the loss of pressure from the barrel/cylinder gap. Even with equal length barrels you'd gain velocity. I haven't seen any published load data for .500 Linebaugh out of a rifle, but I believe you can count on increased pressures in the case in comparison to a revolver set up.

Well, as far as 450gr at 1300 fps in 500L. That's the standard "full house" 500L load. That's what I get with my 455gr 5.5" barrel, actually 1325. 540gr I'm at 1150. LilGun in these loads. As far as fps gain revolver to rifle with my 454's I gain 400+ fps going from 4" to 20" barrel with my 355gr load, 1275ish to 1675ish. 435gr load I pick up 300+ fps. 1100ish to 1400ish.

Not a dumb question at all. John might be able to help you. There was a model 71 or 1886 that we were working on when I was there..... It was the 90s but I bet he has a pretty close guess. It was a 500 maximum but I bet he'll know.

I have a 475 Linebaugh single shot rifle that David Clements built but I haven't had a chance to shoot it for comparison to my Linebaugh 4 5/8" 475 revolver. I'll add that to my "to do" list.

A .44 in a carbine will gain about 33% in velocity over a revolver, depending on load.

i do have some win296 but i don't like using it. i could find some blue dot if i have to. since i can't find any 500-530gr loads, i think it will go to the 450+/-gr loads. it can be either the 450gr swc, 460gr keith swc gc or 450gr lfn gc. the velocity will be the same, 1300+/-fps. what do you think?

I guess this reply might not help much to your specific questions But, its free and maybe interesting..? I say for bear/deer find a load from above that's Accurate and go make meat.... A 400+gr bullet traveling at velocity's as described Will poke holes In & Out Any deer/bear you find... Accuracy is your Friend and the deer/bear around here haven't learned to read velocity charts that I know of. If they ain't breathing, they ain't livin. That my friend is all that you need for a proper "invite" ovet for dinner. HA IMO velocity after a certain point is only gaining yardage not lethality. I shoot a similar load in my 45-70's (430gr WFNPB maybe 1100-1300fps? No chrony) and it's a hammer on game. The nice thing is it puts the hammer on big game and not the shooter And, you can eat right up to the hole without a gang of blown up, destroyed, bloodshot meat like usual from a magnumloudenboomer! My $.02 Good luck on the hunt. Let us know how you make out.... BigBore44
