I live in central Florida and we faired pretty good through this storm. Lots of small debris down but no major damage or destruction. I thought the local media did a fairly good job of preparing our communities for what was coming. Fortunately the storm made a small jog to the east late Friday night and dropped from a cat 4 to a cat 3 instead of making landfall as a cat 5 that some were predicting. That would have been devastating even to central Florida. Here's where I fault the media. As it was becoming evident that the storm wasn't as devastating as first predicted the local media and their field reporters were doing everything in their power to ramp up the drama. Seemingly disappointed that there wasn't more injuries, death and destruction. Instead of reporting on how grateful we should be at the lack of the storms intensity they were finding every tree they could that had been blown over. All three of them! They played the drama to the fullest. By the way Governor Scott did an excellent job preparing our state for the storm. Damage was significant to those on the east coast but better than if a cat 5 had been running up the coast or made direct landfall.
Here's my final thought:
For all our country's problems we are still a great nation. And Florida is a great state thanks to men like Gov. Scott that make sure our citizens are taken care of despite how stupid some are. This storm killed hundreds in Haiti and hundreds of thousands more will survive hand to mouth for years because of damage from Matthew. We never lost power and were able to ride it out in comfort. We were also able to acquire enough supplies to live and protect our lives and property for several days if need be. Yep, even though our modern times are proving frustrating and fractured most of us still have a spirit of brotherly love, familial sacrifice and patriotism. God has blessed this nation and some people may buck His plans but in the end His will is evident and manifests itself in the caring of one man and one woman for each other.
