Hey guys. Bought some reloading materials for my soon to arrive BFR in .475 LB. I bought some Cast Performance 425gr. bullets, 50 WFNGC AND 50 LFNGC. Boy looking to push 'em too hot. Would like between 1,200 FPS and 1,300 FPS. I have H110/W296, Lil' Gun, Accurate #9, and some IMR 4227. What do you guys recommend? Also, any other powder recommendations? Primer suggestions?

The following is from chronographed sessions many years ago. 425 WFNGC 26.0 grains 296 Federal 155 magnum primer in Hornady cases. These were shot in two FA Model 83 revolvers. One with 4 & 3/4 inch barrel and the second 6.0 inch. Velocity for the short barrel 1296 f/s and 1349 f/s for the 6.0 inch. Two different casters, Cast Performance and Leadheads. Both bullets gave the same velocities for all practical purposes. My personal opinion is this load is maximum in my revolvers. I tested some 26.3 grains 296 with other specifications the same in the 6.0 inch. Velocities increased over 30 f/s over the 26.0 grain loading. One last note the chronographing of the 4 & 3/4 inch gun was completed several years after the 6 inch. However the ammunition used was loaded at the time of the 6.0 inch testing. Hope this helps.

Is it okay to start at 25.0 grains?

I think I would drop powder charge 10% as a start. Try 23.5 grains. Remember 296 does not like to be compressed, can cause pressure spikes. Also 296 is not a powder for reduced power loads. I've replace most of my 296 loads with Alliant 300 MP. You generally don't need magnum primers either.

I haven't check my velocity yet but this is what I've been using in my BFR .475 Linebaugh lately.
Bullet: Cast Performance 410 gr. WFN-GC (.475) Powder: Hodgdon H-110 24.3 grs. Primer: CCI-350 Case: Hornady
Pretty hefty recoil, couldn't get any of my shooting buddies to fire more than 3 rounds...

I was getting about 1,350 from 26.5 grains of 296 under a 420 grain bullet. I only settled on that powder charge as it delivered the best accuracy from my revolver.

That sounds about right. I can usually load more powder using Winchester Large Pistol Primers vs. a CCI-350.
Bullet: Hunter’s Supply 412 gr. FP Powder: H-110 25.0 grs. Primer: WLP Case: Hornady Velocity 1316 fps
Bullet: Hunter’s Supply 412 gr. FP Powder: H-110 26.0 grs. Primer: WLP Case: Hornady Comments: Cases getting a little sticky; make 25.5 maximum. Almost no leading! Really hard on the wrist and palm.

Whitworth added some solid advice within his post. Velocity is a piece of paper with numbers on it...accuracy should be the goal. I've also found that W296/H110 is most accurate for me under compression with magnum primers, you'll also notice reduced ES. Can't go wrong with those Cast Performance slugs but you may need to adjust powder charges for your gun to get the most accuracy. I like Lil Gun a lot in the big bores and Unique is also very flexible for fun loads.
I get the chrono out after I've settled on a load. That just what works for me.

I got 1,260 fps using 26.5 grains of H110 with a 420 grain cast from a 5.5" barrel. Good accuracy but the recoil was pretty sharp.
A load that gave me decent accuracy and was enjoyable to shoot was 13.0 grains of HS-6 which flew at 963 fps from a 5.5" barrel with a 420 grain cast bullet.

I found some load data over at Accurate Powders that I opted for and loaded today. I did 50 Rds of Accurate No.9, 20.0 grains, and 50 Rds of Ramshot Enforcer, 22.3 grains. Gotta wait for my BFR to arrive to try them out. I appreciate all the input guys. In gonna try out some W296 loads next time afyer I get some more W296 (running low).
