Took the kids for a drive and shot a few grouse. When I got home I started pulling them apart and my 4 year old brought out a stock pot. I threw them in and he brought it into the house. I came in a little later and discovered he had been hard at work. The stock pot now contained a whole lot of Chinese five spice, some Johnnys seasoning salt, a bay leaf, possibly a few shakes of Tabasco, looks like a single clove, ice cubes and water and garlic powder. Should be an interesting dinner.

My wife would have double any and all forms of garlic, but otherwise ya just need some wild rice and red wine.

Glad to see you are using Johnnys seasoning, good stuff! We use it a lot. Goes great on fried taters, meat, salads, french fries, roasts, etc. Sounds like you have some good help with your 4 year old & those grouse. I'm guessing either Ruffs or Forest Grouse, some people call them Franklins or Fools Grouse. I've killed lots of them with sticks or rocks & killed one with my Russell Belt Knife while he was perched on a limb about 6 feet off the ground....lucky throw!

Ruffed, Blue or Spruce ? Or ? Years ago we were on the ridge/mtn to the east of the divide, in the Bob, just south of the wall. Saw big dumb grouse that would sit and look at ya. Ruffs in the east NEVER do that unless you are way to the north of their range, Ontario and up until you run outta trees.

The ones I shot the other day were ruffs. Spruce grouse go by a lot of names. Most people around here call them Franklins. But they are also known as fool hens.

Dick I have always been partial to Johnnys. When I was in the military I was introduced to Tony Chacheres. Its a creole seasoning salt and is equally as good if you like a little spice.

It ended up being pretty good. It soaked for a whole day then I rinsed it and cooked it in the crockpot.

It was just the birds and a little bit of the brine with chicken stock. I did not put anything else in the crockpot as I was not sure of how they were going to turn out. My daughter really liked it. That was all she ate for dinner.
