Has anyone tried .358" Hawk bullets? I know Hawk bullets tend to be a little soft but I have a few boxes that have been sitting on the shelf for a while and I'm thinking they might work for my newest project. I sent a Remington 7600 carbine .30-06 to Oregunsmithing to be re-bored to .35 Whelen and it's due back tomorrow. With the 18.5" barrel they might work but I've got zero experience with them and have no loading data to go by. Any suggestions?

I can't speak to the Hawks in a 35 Whelen though I have one. I have used them in a 400 Whelen and a 10.75x57. I took a cow moose last year with a 400 grain Hawk round nose in the 400 Whelen. I was impressed with the performance. Good penetration and expansion and you could eat the bullet hole. I didn't recover the bullet but the wound channel indicated excellent expansion. I think Hawks are at their best in the moderate velocity range, 2100-2800 fps. They should work great in your 35. Hawk suggests starting low and working up as their bullets are soft. As for powders in the 35 Whelen, look to 4320, RL15 and H4895. I really like 4320 in mine.
