Back in the day, when real men shot iron sights across the board, and the current standing record aggregate score was fired, the 7 3/8 inch S&W M41 was the gun of choice for many. The last 3/8 inches of barrel was a nipple for a cutts compensator. FWIW you never saw the compensator on the barrel of a competent shooter. I was told there was an accuracy impact if you did not keep the comp impeccably clean.

When the comp went away the barrel became an even 7 inches. Properly supported shooters had the rear sight replaced with a Bomar unit that was made specifically for the M41.

The Bomar sight required a little machine work and a little silver solder

Bomar made a smorgasbord of sight ribs back then too. Even a full length rib for the 7 inch M41. Never saw one of these on the firing line but I saw and bought one... Made for a very heavy gun

And Herrett made, and still makes, what they call their "Trainer Grip." Makes the M41 grip shaped like a 1911 grip. There was one that simulated a flat mainspring housing and one that simulated the arched mainspring housing. The flat housing grips are easy to find these days, the crched are not. Here is an arched.

The original grip is a swoopy thing... I much preferred the Herrett training for match shooting.

That little cap on the end of the barrel catch your eye? That was what S&W provided to put on your compensated barrel when the comp was not installed. Made for a more finished look..

Accuracy wise I remember the old heads always looking for the original 7 3/8 inch barrels... In the unending quest for accuracy there are custom barrels out there. This one is a Clark. Like so many items mass produced for profit items they do not have a sterling reputation for accuracy across the board. Mine shoot good but there are better paths to go down for accuracy. The big dogs will tell you that the ONLY way to get guaranteed accuracy from the M41 is to bore and sleeve the original barrels.

That is enough of the gun porn!🙂 I played with the 41's for several winter league matches. These were all loaners, buddy has a wheel barrow or two full of shooter grade 41's. I was on the search for one at the time. I tried several different ones and happened to have one worked on by Clark that shot the best for me. He would loan it to me any time I wanted but would never sell it to me. My scores were usually pretty good for me, but I seemed to have some odd swings week to week at times. Than I ran across a Ruger MKII that had been rubbed on at Clarks. My scores ran more consistent but a bit lower average, all me of course. The Ruger shot better groups with cheaper ammo than the 41 did, which was a plus. Got the Clark MKII for about $100 less than a new MKIII cost at the time, along with the the gents shooting box. Had the recipt for the base gun along with a recipt from Clarks. I did not steal it as the owner put the price on it! Maybe he felt sorry for me lol. Also had on of the IZH 22's. Sold it too one of the 4H kids, someone with good eyes and ability deserved it way more than me. Jeff

I`ve loved the model 41 since I started shooting and over the years I put together everything in the photo. Almost bought a 5 1/2" barrel with extendable front sight but the price was to high......
