Who is using TB in long guns ? Lead bullets only ? Heavier bullets better ? Stay near max ? Looking to hear from you SASS/CAS folks ! Have friend looking for a light load to plink and play and for smaller son to shoot.

Dare I try some 180 XTP's ? Minimal bearing surface..otherwise have 205gr RNFP's to try. I don't think I have any lighter 44 bullets here at the moment. In times past have had Matt's 135gr and others 160,165gr offerings.

Jacketed bullets for plinking loads is a bad idea I think, I agree a 200gr rnd nose and a fair dose of Trail Boss should work just fine. You dont want to go too mild and stick a bullet in the barrel...

Yes, thats my concern. Would start at heavier end for the rifle due to this concern. Understand TB to be loaded by volume, to base of bullet, no air space, is max, then can download to 70%. You can weigh these amounts and go by weight after. My Hodgen magazine size manual doesn't show TB in the rifle section, only the handgun section, yet the SASS/CAs folks are gonna want to have one load, per the ole west ! So..figured.. I'll try any by guess, by golly type loads thru my own Marlin first. Thanks Fowler-san !

Haven't tried it in a rifle in .38 spc yet, but plan to for the boys. We do use it in .22 Hornet, 30-30, and .303 Brit all under cast. The favorite Trail Boss load is for the .458 WM, 17gr under a 535gr postel yeilds 1025 fps, mild recoil and still hits with a big thump.

Here is the response I received a while back about using TB in many cartridges with different types of bullets.
"You can use Trail Boss powder for plated, lead or jacketed bullets in any cartridge above 32 Long S&W and under 50 BMG. The max load is a case full to the base of the bullet with no compression and the starting load is 30% less. This formula works with all cartridges." That had been my understanding, nice to get it, hear it, from the horses mouth. Though I keep thinking of the lowest, starting load as being 70% of the determined max, and they are saying 30% less than the max. Same/same, but wording can be an issue and I need to watch that better. My friend showed up with one box of XTP 300gr for hunting loads, hogs. Another of the 180gr XTP's. Came with a 1000 CCI300's and CFE Pistol and IMR4227. I gave him a 100 cases. Shooting went well, though we both hated the goofy little safety. We discussed getting peep/ghost ring rear sights and some kinda F/O fronts. Neither gun cycled my FWC rounds. If firmly cycled, my 255 WFN's would work. The loads I have for my Marlin using 240XTP's that got switched to mag primers over cold weather concerns, extract horribly. I either have to go back to CCI300 primer or drop charge, or both maybe. More fun to be had. The eye opener of the day was the first try of Penn's Thunderhead on 6.5grs of Unique, thru my Bulldog. NEVE shot a group that small, with that gun. Scary good, bears and 'squatches beware.

Good morning. I've been a long time lurker but this is my first post. We shoot quite a bit of Trail Boss, in several rifle and pistol calibers. My kids have cut their teeth on the stuff. We primarily shoot cast, often Laser Cast, with great results in 44spl and Mag, 38-55, 30-30 and 45-70. I have also shot both Berry and Rainier in 44 with equal success. We have had good accuracy and little to any recoil.
240gr Laser Cast, CCI LPP primer and 7-7.5 grains of TB works great in both revolvers and for pistol caliber lever gun silhouette.

My notes for .45 Colt tell me that I use 40% more Trail Boss than Unique to get the same velocity for the same bullet. It also costs 30% more than Unique. It thus costs almost twice as much for powder to launch the same bullet to the same velocity using Trail Boss compared to Unique. I stopped using Trail Boss

in the past, all I used for CAS cartridges was Trailboss... so I shoot 38 Special, & 45 Colt in lever guns, as well as the revolvers... I load about 3/4 up the power scale... nothing powder puff... had great function in all guns...
my main concern right now is availability... while I can find most every powder in stock at 3 or 4 local shops, I've not seen a single jar of Trailboss in over a year ( & a year ago I was able to get "one"... so it's been a while since I've seen it in quantities to load a couple 1000 rounds of 45 Colt )
I like the powder even at the elevated price point, I just can't find any locally
I get great accuracy, & consistency, & a full case to boot ( no chance of a double charge, or poor ignition due to low charge density )
