A friend just bought a Rossi 44mag levergun. Wants me to help him load for it. I have a Marlin 1894 44mag.. Have fired a 38/357 Rossi a few yrs ago. How do the Rosii's stack up with the Marlin ? How do the bores run ? Do they tend to like heavier or lighter bullets ? Similar restrictions as to bullets nose shape/lengths ? Thanks.

Sooo..'bout 30 180XTP's leftover here, and some Longshot. A lite load for the new shooters wanted, but want the bullet to safely exit the bore. I'll throw a charge weight out there..13.5grs ? Safe ? Safe to exit bore, as in not too light ? He has a shopping list of things to order, more in line as to the norm, but this, for now ?

Hodgdon's online data shows 13.5gr Longshot, 180gr Horn XTP, as the start load in their Handgun data section. Load gives 1,499 fps at 29,400 CUP in an 8.275" bbl.
I have a 16" Rossi M92 that is a bit length sensitive -- it won't feed ammo longer than 1.600" or so. I don't know if this is just my gun or?
Mine cleaned up real nicely by lubing and working the action about a thousand times while watching TV (just do it short bursts so as not to annoy your significant others).
As mentioned above, the M92 has been offered in .454 C. I have one and it is a handy, powerful combination.
FWIW,
Paul

Can't speak for the 44 but I have the 20" 45 Colt. It handles 300 grain bullets just fine. I haven't tried anything heavier. I was pleasantly surprised to find it would feed the 285 grain SWC bullets as slick as the factory 250's and the 300 WFN.

I'd send Steve an email and ask him. Not sure what the rate of twist is for Rossi's and how the chambers are either. stevesgunz.com

Think friend will be happy with the 13.5gr of Longshot/180XTP loading. Ran a couple thru my 18" M1984 along with one with a 200gr XTP and then lastly one of my deer hunting loads, a 240gr XTP using IMR4227 and a CCI350. Just off handed down my backyard hillside they looked like a group. Recovered one 180gr XTP, jacket separated, bullet pretty much turned inside out. This bullet won't be hunted, but might be given household chores along with plinking for him. Thanks folks !
