Folks talking about .480 midframes and such got me to wondering if anyone has done a .44 Magnum on one? Obviously Ruger thinks it's too much for a six shot, anybody ignored this advice and simply deepened the chambers on a special or done it with a new five shot cylinder? Why, why not?

I've read where many have deepened the chambers and they handle 44 Magnum loads up to 240 grn just fine. UNDERSTAND, Im not recommending this, just hearsay.
That being said, a five shot cylinder would work just fine. The same frames are available in 357 Magnum and 45 Colt, so length of cartridge shouldn't be a problem.
Many 45 Colt RedHawks have been rechambered to 454 Casull and I've never heard of a failure.
I believe the problem only arrives when proof loads are fired in the guns. Ruger is a stickler for brute strong guns.

Not planning any shenanigans at all, I have a 5 shot .44 Mag in my Freedom 83. I just haven't heard of anybody doing it on the mid frame and I'm surprised .

I know Harton built a 5 shot 44 mag Bisley on a mid frame Ruger Fkat Top. I think works just fine.

Brian Pearce has built at least four 44 mags out of U.S. Firearms 38 special by rechambering the cylinders. USFA cylinders are the same diameter, hardness (35-38 Rc) and made of the same material (4140) as Ruger's NM midframe flattops. He says hardness of 40 Rc or a little harder is best.

I understand Ruger made the bigger frame for the 44 mag because the mid frame 357 would not stand the proof loads that they used. Factory 44 mag loads were fine. Brian Pearce that had articles in Hanloader magazine where he had USFA 44 Spec. cylinders deepened to 44 Mag. USFA was supposed to come out with a 44 Mag and their cylinders were about the same size a mid frame Rugers. They might have run into the same problem as Ruger had with the proof loads. Every body have a Great Labor Day weekend. Ron

Converted 2 by reaming chambers deeper, with appropriate loads either factory or handload of SAAMI pressure am unconcerned. Deep seating of bullets to make them fit the cylinder or some of the insane FA M83/Redhawk Only type loads would definitely grenade them by the time you crammed slug deep enough into case to fit. That said am very pleased with the pair of midframes I rechambered

Groo here If you want a 6 shot, the 41mag will work just fine. I have 2 new vaqueros [mid frame] by Andy Horvath.

Don't really want anything, just making conversation. Was going to do a .41Mag midframe when the anniversaries hit the shelves but found I liked them just fine in .357 but I think the .41 is a great round.

Over the years, Uberti has offered their Buckhorn (or similar model) revolver in .44 Mag.. I had one, a number of years ago, and it worked and shot just fine.. Cylinder dimensions were identical to contemporary versions in .357 or .45 Colt. The frame was slightly different from the regular Cattlemen frame, but only careful measurement would bear that out.. Grip frame was slightly longer as well, and it was the most comfortale-shooting .44 mag I ever fired. Much more so than the SBH I also had on hand at the time..
