Whatever will fit in the chamber easily with a given bullet and it will vary from slug to slug. Same as any revolver.

nolongcolt,I don't have a Ruger 454. But, the length of the brass case is knowable as well as the length of the cylinder, right ? doesnt he simply need to know the max crimp to nose length for this configuration? Maybe I read the question wrong....

As they say it all depends. Each gun is its own thing. The most critical part is the chamber of the cylinder and they can vary from gun to gun. You just about gotta have a gun in hand with a supply of bullets to know for certain what will fit. One can pretty much be sure that all factory ammo will fit and that is a starting point, but there isn't much point in laying in a supply of a certain bullet, especially cast slugs, then find out you cant seat them properly. I don't have either of these guns either but with all the issues that have cropped up with them, I would not buy a bunch of bullets until I had the gun to check, fit and measure. Those that actually have these guns should be able to give you a better starting point.

Agree with Nolongcolt. I've tried 6 different cast bullet configurations and all have different COAL. I seat all to use the crimp groove and in doing so none are a length problem in my 480 SBH. A few are pretty close to the cylinder mouth but all function perfectly. Personally, I like very little bullet jump to the lands and seem to get my best accuracy with this method. But whatever bullet you choose for the 480 make sure you apply a good crimp. You do not want a locked up cylinder.

I've one of the 480's and have some of the Miha's HP's with 2 cannelures/crimp grooves. More than enough cylinder length to use the lower cannelure. Others are shooting bullet weights to 440grs.. You'll have to name a specific bullet to get a specific answer.

New guy here. First post as a matter of fact. I have the .454 and am loading some 255 gr Keith style bullets into the front crimp groove with no problems. Think the bullets were from Missouri Bullet Company. They are 18 Brinell and don't seem to lead at 1200+- fps so far on some lighter loads with tite group.
