Dang! I knew better than to look.. Wilson has .458 SOCOM conversions on his web site too... Barrels, carriers, springs, gas blocks, gas tubes, dies... This looks like much more fun than a little 30 bore rifle...

They are fun. Both my brothers have them. One a 16 inch Rock River which is used for hunting deer and the other brother has a 12 SBR. He had some hand loads worked up for it and shot a sub 1 inch group at 100 yards with it. I was impressed considering it is only a 12 inch barrel.

Only problem is chasing the brass at $1+ each! Screw that.

Oh Axe...you shoulda known better!
I have a Wilson upper on a Wilson lower ( seemed to make sense). I had the upper for a long time before I went forward on the project. We've got an upcoming hog trip for SHOOTING GALLERY ONLINE with the.little beast. A few points to watch out for:
1) It recoils, but doesn't seem that big a deal to me. Think 45/70 in a Ruger #1. 2) Forget what you read...magazines are a BIG problem, especially metal mags. I finally got one metal mag to work by bending up the leading part of the rails to present the cartridge higher and grinding a half-moon cut on the front of the mag to allow the bullet more room to exit when the slide picks it up.. IMHO, P-Mags are a lost cause. Save yourself some grief and get the Lancer-made .458 mags from Wilson. My non-modded Lancers work as well. YMMV 3) I've got a dot on mine right now, but I just got a Leupold "Pig-Plex" scope which seems a match made in heaven. Forget cheaper dots; the recoil'll do'em in. 4) Put your order in for Starline brass NOW. 5) It is a GREAT cartridge...the Wilson rounds are pricey but very accurate. When I was down with Billy Wilson working on his GUN GUY book, we talked a lot about the round...it's about the only thing he hunts with these days! Including on African game. Suppresses well, too.
Yeah, it'll bankrupt you, but they're not giving away .454 Casull rounds either. I just got a T&E of the CMMG ..458, and -- bless their hearts! -- they sent me a CASE of mixed ammo! There's a new pack of coyotes on the ranch...(cue funeral march)

I have both and I like the Beowulf better. Super easy to reload with heavily plated bullets from Ranier. They are plenty accurate.
But, I still have both!

Reloading helps with that ammo cost. And there are a helluva lot more .458" bullet choices than .500" bullets. Ive loaded 250gr to 500gr and pretty much settled on 300gr for hogs and deer. Plenty of thump. Never recovered a bullet.

I went with the 50 B as well but turned around and sold it due to my shoulder issues. Between the big 3 I like the 50 B for ammo, reloading, shear power n a compact package. Also forget muzzle brakes with these cartridges, there isn't enough gas produced to make them work correctly, just increase noise & blast, much better option for true recoil reduction is an MGI mechanical buffer or a hydraulic buffer.

I myself have a 45-70 so I don't feel the need for a 458.

There are a ton of good .500 bullets since the 500 S&W came about.
But they really aren't needed. The plated Raniers will take care of anything, and will shoot 1.5" groups at 100 yards.
