I am surprised no one has chimed in. I live in Montana but if I was looking for a guided hunt I would go to Idaho. Tags are reasonably priced for non residents, baiting is allowed and a two bear limit in the Selway and Frank Church area. And wilderness most people will never experience.

You can hunt brownies in some parts of Alaska now over bait.
I was quoted $5000 for a week all inclusive.

Easier to fly though, especially with your pistol. Seriously though. If you want to hunt griz in Alaska, check with this guy. He is one guide who actually accompanies his clients in the field, he doesn't just give you an assistant guide. Jake Jeffersen www.blackriverhunting.comHe goes by BRWNBR over at the Alaska Outdoor Forums. I've been a moderator there for years. Jake has posted for years pics and stories of his hunts. And like was mentioned above, yes, you can shoot griz over bait in a lot of areas of Alaska but it's not as easy as it may sound. Here's a recent thread from BRWNBR (Jake). He knows how to find bears and clients on them. A few years ago he posted a pic/story of Griz Kill number 100. And he personally guided all those hunts. forums.outdoorsdirectory.com/showthread.php/154325-Grizzly-down-and-out

Traveling is nice and often adds to the adventure. See you're in Mi., did ya consider the UP or Minnesota ? Reasons not ? Just wondering. I've crossed Idaho and spent some time in the Bob of western Montana, wow ! That'd have to be considered. Per tags/regs/numbers. Always wanted to run black bears with hounds, no longer consider myself fit enough.

Recall reading of some big bears coming outta eastern Carolinas lately. Though Contender is in western NC, he may have access to info.

It's true we have some BIG black bears here in NC. Most of the biggest are in the eastern swamps of the state. Around my area, we don't have many, if any, guides & such. Good land is hard to secure & limited in size. Most of us here do try & hunt with "the locals" & know where we can go & where not to go. It's very hard, as land access is a mis-match of good & bad. Funny thing,,, bears can't read posted signs,, but seem to know where to run into certain areas to get us off them. A big one here can be 400-500 lbs.
I'd have to ask some of my buddies about eastern guides & such. Never been hunting there myself.

The Adirondeck Mts. In upstate NY has huge bears I'm have seen 600-700 over 6ft. tall black's taken from there they have an early season begging Sept. then regular season bear & deer in October, spot & stalk or predator calls only. Oh wait I'm sorry it's NY you can't bring your handgun to the communist state.
