Running a little low on Varget, checked all the LGS's around here, nothing. Some on GB but I refuse to pay more for shipping by twice than for the powder. Tonight, stopped into the LGS closest to home that had none the other day, they had 4 pounds on the shelf. I bought two. They had lots of 231, H110 most of the Alliant powders, Accurate, Hodgdons. Pretty good supply.

I keep at least 8lbs of Varget. It is a rifle shooters Unique. As a person on another forum said.....I don't think Hodgdon knows everything Varget can do and do very well.

nolongcolt..... you don't name cartridges you load with Hodgdon Varget. Among medium burn rifle powders which span many applications in high style, Hodgdon 4895 and IMR 4895. As to whether the 4895 of IMR and Hodgdon may be interchanged, championship competition forced me to do so, and sight dope remained the same. While many championships have been won with Varget, the grand tally of trophies collected with 4895 would cover a hayfield. (Besides these short stick powders, there are great ball propellants for accuracy with velocity in the medium burn range. However, some of these fine ball powders lack the rpm range of stick propellants.) Hold your wallet until you find Varget at a reasonable price. David Bradshaw

I load Varget primarily in .308 and .223 where it works very well. Also was the best choice in my .405 Win model 95, and in target loads for .30-06 and even .338 Win mag, its very versatile. I burn lots of IMR 4895 as well, especially in the M1A rifles. These days a reasonable price is whatever the LGS is charging for it. In this case it was $29 a pound. GB prices are sometimes a little less but when the sellers add the haz mat and shipping it becomes insane and I refuse.

Find some TAC for the 223. Great powder for that one that will likely surprise you with higher velocities and great accuracy.

TAC is an excellent powder in the 223. Very smooth metering.
